Dear Members

We are well and truly back into the swing of things at North Steyne. It is great to see so many of you back on the beach and thank you for all the hours you have put on patrol or those just helping around the Club already.

It is exciting to see such a great group of Nippers, our largest in several years. Great as well to have our education program in full swing with several groups being trained to obtain their SRC or Bronze. Well done to all our hard working trainers!

We are having our Back to the Beach Party on Saturday, 9 November. This will be an opportunity to enjoy some great food and drink, catch up with friends and meet other members of the Club. We kick off early with some special activities for Nippers and then later roll into dinner, drinks, and dancing. A band will be playing in the hall. Best dressed patrol wins a prize. Education

It’s been nice meeting some new members I didn’t know whilst doing proficiencies. The feedback we have been receiving in relation to the new format has been outstanding.
As November is already here, we will be running a few more proficiency days for the few who haven’t been able to complete this prior to now.

Upcoming Courses

IRB Drivers: this course will be run on a Saturday. If you would like to do this course, please register your interest here
Pre-Reqs are: 17yo at the time of assessment, proficient IRB Crew, proficient Bronze

* IRB Drivers are needed on patrols so if you are currently a Crewie, 17 years old and would like to become an IRB Driver, please give this course a go.

Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate: if you would like to do the ARTC course, please register your interest here as the next course is scheduled to start in mid-November if we get enough candidates.
Pre-Reqs: 15yo at the date of assessment, hold either proficient Bronze Medallion, First Aid Certificate or Resuscitation Certificate

Bronze: The next course is due to commence November 6. If you are an SRC looking to upskill to Bronze or have friends or relatives who want to get involved, please ask them to contact us and register their interest.
Pre-Reqs are: 15yo at the time of assessment (mid-December) and be able to swim 400m in 9 minutes or less.

Competition

This month we would like to feature one of our most talented competitors in Surf Sports, Molly Parker!

1. So Molly, how did you start in Surf Boats and Surf Sports

I have been a member of North Steyne since 2014 and have been involved in IRB with Mikey [one of our open male rowers]. Mikey mentioned a few times to me about Surfboats and I was always too nervous to give it a go.

Nippers

Nippers is back for season 2019-20. North Steyne beach has been a hive of activity with 250+ nippers on Sunday mornings, our SRC group training on Saturday afternoons, & nipper board training on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. We also have the additional sprint training session with Coach Clayton before Sunday nippers.

It’s great to see so many new faces joining us and so many nippers returning season after season; having fun, always learning something new and improving their skills on the beach and in the water.

Training at North Steyne

Join in Board Training Every Sunday morning at 8am with our Club Board Coach, Bec Stewart. Bec has been working with North Steyne for many years and brings a wealth of experience to our club.

All levels welcome to attend! The focus is on skills and fitness and Bec is only too willing to help. Practise is the best Practice!

Ripper Nippers are Back

Excitement levels were extreme for our Ripper Nippers during an IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) inspection! Our trusty Cadets were helping out with Water Safety, pictured above in their orange safety vests.

North Steyne’s infamous shore dump popped up during the Rippers session and cadets had their hands full ensuring that nobody was hurt or knocked down as the Rippers ran into the surf with their boards.

A fantastic morning as always with a mix of returning Ripper Nippers & newbies.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AT NORTH STEYNE

Monthly Friday Night SIPS are back with our incredible Bar Manager, Paul Matthews heading up a great team of Volunteers! Easy dinner options are available with our partner The North Steyne Snack Shack.

If you would like to join the team you need to be over 18 years of age with a current RSA certificate. Learn more about getting your certificate here.

The Sunday BBQ crews are busy as always!! If you would like to volunteer to help out with the BBQ please contact Claire to enquire about the roster and to see if there are any spots to fill.
