Cross Lutheran
PEEK OF THE WEEK!
for the week of
November 3rd, 2019

Hello Saints of Cross Lutheran,

Last night the worship committee and I decided that we will replace Cross Kids Worship by giving our younger brothers and sisters opportunity to participate in worship every week.  The Sunday School will still sing on the third Sunday.  However, reading opportunities, ushering opportunities and greeting opportunities are available to families and kids every Sunday instead of just the third Sunday. The church is always all ages combined.  Kids are not the “future church,” but they are the church with us now. Our decision reflects wanting to be all age friendly all the time.  We will strive to make worship excellent and meaningful for all ages here.   Much thanks is due to those whom participated the last few months in Cross Kids Worship.  Your ministry is appreciated and was enjoyed.

We also decided that “BY FAITH” will have some Sunday morning opportunities to lead worship as well.  We will keep folks posted when this will begin.

Please note that on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 27th a 6:00 p.m. worship service will be held here.

God Bless,

Pastor John

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

The Time Has Come

Today, volunteers will be delivering pledge information and commitment cards for the Mortgage Reduction Campaign to all households. Please welcome these volunteers warmly and keep the campaign and those who are giving of their time in your prayers. We are asking households to prayerfully consider their campaign gift over this next week.

The same volunteer will be following up with each household to pick-up your pledge card in a sealed security envelope next Sunday, November 10 and return it to Cross’ office. As a reminder, all giving is confidential. Thank you for your consideration to support this important effort!

Please Take The CAT!

We’re launching the CAT next week. No, it’s not our church pet but the “Church Assessment Tool” (CAT). This is your way to join your voice in a congregation-wide effort to formulate plans and help in the process of calling a new pastor.

The link to the online CAT will be shared via email to members, letter to all households, as well as on the Cross Lutheran Facebook page. All members (age 16 and up) and regular visitors are asked to take the CAT (only one adult member from each family should answer the financial questions) . It’s completely anonymous. Plan on 20-30 minutes in one sitting to make this investment for our church. Thank you! For those without online access or familiarity with computers assistance will be provided by Church Council members. Details about this will be a the letter arriving this week.

Read more about the CAT at holycowconsulting.com. The outcomes will provide in-depth insight and a read on our church that will be valuable in matching a new pastor for our church.

Here are some answers to some FAQ's:

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where does the CAT come from?   The CAT is the property of Holy Cow! Consulting based in Ohio. J. Russell Crabtree developed it. It’s been used in over 2000 churches across the USA. Read more at holycowconsulting.com.

What is Mustard Seed Consulting? The Mustard Seed Consulting, Cumberland, WI was formed by Pastor Kurt Jacobson in 2016. MSC works with church to engage members and bring relevant, data driven evidence to a wide-range of endeavors and challenges churches face.

Jacobson is a trained interpretive consultant of Holy Cow! assessments serving churches across the country. An ordained pastor of the ELCA he served Trinity Lutheran Church, Eau Claire for 28 years until retirement.

He holds a BA in Business/Hospital Administration and Organizational Communications from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN and a Master’s of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary, in St. Paul, MN. He holds a certificate in Intentional Interim Ministry from the National Association of Lutheran Interim Pastors.

Why take time for a church assessment?  Because the information it offers will help us understand the range of views that exist in our congregation, our priorities and opportunities as we seek to make plans for the future

How long will it take to complete? Plan to spend 20-30 minutes in one sitting. We need every adult and teen (grade 10 or age 16 and older) to complete the CAT in order to get a clear picture.

Is the CAT anonymous? Yes! The answers will be handled anonymously. No one will see your responses and know they are yours.  If you lack online availability or need assistance, please contact the church office (or a council member) OR avail yourself to sessions where online access and assistance will be offered on Sundays and some weekdays … As a last resort, a printed assessment may be made available. This must be returned to the office or Pastor John by Sunday, Dec.1, 2019. Kindly do not also take the survey online.

How is this different from other surveys? The process that MSC offers us is unique as it gives all members an equal voice in assessing our church. This is distinguished from other processes church employ to gain insight, such as:

  • Impression-driven process which relies on internal thoughts and feelings of persons in leadership to gauge reality;

  • Anecdotally-driven process which relies on conversation with individuals or groups that aren’t necessarily representative of the entire church;

  • Authority-driven process which rely more on the perspectives of those in positions of power.

What comes from the CAT? A 28 page report called Vital Signs©  details the levels of satisfaction and energy, culture and climate present in the congregation, priorities by age groups, critical success factors, and evaluative insight into key factors such as worship and music, morale, governance, conflict management, pastoral leadership, hospitality and more.  All the evidence is aimed to inform leaders and guide them in making better decisions, in less time, with greater effectiveness for the sake of the congregation’s future.

How Will We Learn About the Results? The task force and council will meet with Pastor Kurt Jacobson of Mustard Seed Consulting as he presents his analysis of the CAT in June. Thereafter a printed “Executive Summary” will be available and the task force will find other ways to share results with you.

Please help us engage others in taking the CAT by Sunday, 12/1/19 Thank you!

Remember, there will be opportunities to access a computer and the CAT at church for people who would like assistance. The survey will be open for response on Sunday, 11/10/19 and close at the end of the day on Sunday, 12/1/19.

Thank you for giving the gift of your time and your input to the start of our transition.

In Christ,
