Friends with BERT?

Dear Reader

Have you heard about Google’s most recent major search algorithm update? It’s called BERT and it’s already impacting featured snippets and 1 in 10 US searches (in English). Other countries and languages will be similarly affected as it rolls out more widely.

Businesses that have less-than-optimal digital content are feeling the sting of this update. And savvy businesses are scrambling to take advantage of this update and nab search traffic from their competitors.

If you don’t know what BERT is, whether you’ll be affected by it and how you should respond to it, I’ve written a guide that you’ll find handy. There’s an audio version at that link too if you prefer to learn by listening.

I hope that blog post puts your mind at rest and helps you improve your digital marketing so you can win more sales and grow your business. But if you have any questions about BERT, just hit reply to this email and I’ll be happy to help.

Have a great day

Kelly

Tip of the month

If you want to drive more traffic to your website, you need to always be promoting and distributing your website content. This doesn’t mean sharing each piece of content once and hoping everyone in a given channel will see it first time. It also doesn’t mean you need a new piece of content every day.

What you need to do is choose your distribution and promotion platforms. For most people, this will include at least one social media channel so I’ll use this as an example.

Then, for every evergreen blog post and informational webpage you produce, you should share that content at least 12 times per year. (Evergreen means it’s not time sensitive — if you’ve got an event or sale coming up, obviously you don’t want to share information about it after it’s finished.) This means more of your network will see your posts. It also means followers have a better chance of seeing your content when they’re ready to consume it. It also gives your network more opportunities to share your content with their network.

Action of the month

  1. Each week, choose one piece of content on your website. This could be something that’s already there or something new that you’re going to upload that week.
  2. Pick out 12 quotes or pieces of information that your ideal customer will find interesting or useful.
  3. Create a social media post for each of those 12 pieces of information/quotes. Each post should include a link to the content (or if you use instagram, a note to find the link in your bio). Each post should also include a visual element. That might be the automatically generated social media ‘card’ for your link or it could be one or more pictures or videos.
  4. Pick a date and time over the next 12 months to deliver each social media post. You might deliver 1 per month or you might concentrate your efforts in the first month and then gradually increase the amount of time between posts as the year wears on. If you use software to schedule posts, pop each post into that tool and schedule it accordingly. If you don’t use that kind of tool (or you’re using a free version that limits the number of scheduled posts you can queue) pop each post on your calendar with a reminder for you to post it at the appropriate time.
  5. Do this for all your future content.
