    Yaroslav Boychenko Piano Concert
     - On Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Yaroslav (Slava) Boychenko will present a special concert of Bach selections and Russian music at Redeemer Lutheran Church (9654 74 Avenue) in Edmonton. A conservatory-trained pianist and now a Lutheran pastor in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia, Slava grew up in an atheist Soviet family where they never spoke of God. He first came into contact with the idea of the Divine when he attended a movie and heard a J.S. Bach piece being played as part of the soundtrack. He was immediately entranced by Bach, and over the years his love and interest in the composer grew—leading to his investigation of Lutheranism as an integral part of Bach’s soul. The story of Slava’s conversion and ultimate call to the Lutheran ministry is exciting and inspiring. He will be accompanied by Rev. Leif Camp, an American missionary in the Volga River area of Russia. Admission is free, with a freewill offering going to the pastor and his Russian ministry. Find Redeemer on Facebook and online at www.redeemerlutheranchurch.ca for more info.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The Triune God Curbs Evil and Overcomes Death with Resurrection

Christians live as “sons of God, being sons of the resurrection” (Luke 20:36), for the Lord our God “is not God of the dead, but of the living” (Luke 20:38). “Those who deny that there is a resurrection” (Luke 20:27) neither know the Scriptures nor the power of God, but the baptized faithful know “that the dead are raised” (Luke 20:37). For the Lord, who was, and is and is to come, knows Israel’s sufferings and has “come down to deliver them” (Ex. 3:8). Moses reveals the name of Yahweh to God’s chosen people, by which He is “remembered throughout all generations” (Ex. 3:15). In contrast to that sacred remembrance of His name, St. Paul warns against the antichrist, who “takes his seat in the temple of God” (2 Thess. 2:4). That lawless man preaches and practices the activity of Satan. Christians, however, are comforted by the coming of the Lord Jesus, who slays the antichrist and refutes his false doctrine “with the breath of his mouth” (2 Thess. 2:8). By His preaching, “stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught” (2 Thess. 2:15). Hear, receive and believe God’s promise of love, comfort and good hope.

Eternal Gospel and Incredible Grace

“Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth.”  Revelation 14:6

During the Reformation, this text was used to refer to Luther’s ministry and the Lutheran message: we have an eternal Gospel to proclaim. Christ has freed us from our sins without any works on our part. We are saved by grace alone. And, ironically enough, Luther said this should make him the “apostle of works” because once we are freed by grace, we are truly free to serve God in works that flow from thankfulness and praise.

Consider what this means within our own life. We are not bound by the needs and necessities of the secular world, even though we are in it. We have a higher purpose. Our calling to “love your neighbour” through God’s incredible grace, enables great works to flow out of us. Some of these great works include supporting the work of our church through gifts and offerings, which proclaims this eternal Gospel. In death, just like in life, you have an opportunity to be a blessing to your church through a gift in your will or by other means. To learn more about how you can establish a charitable end-of-life gift, please contact your regional Gift Coordinator or visit Lutheran Foundation Canada’s website at www.lutherafoundation.ca.
