Welcome to the Term 4, 2019 NZALT newsletter, part of the Ministry of Education’s funding package under the Networks of Expertise. This newsletter focuses on events in term 4, 2019 and looks at important dates for 2020. There will be a further newsletter towards the end of the term with more information, particularly about the NZALT Conference, Wellington, 3-5 July 2020.

Networks of Expertise funding
This funding is enabling NZALT to support all Learning Languages teachers, including te reo Māori, Pasifika and NZSL. This support provides a newsletter every term and support for teachers to attend PLD and inquiry clusters as well as other initiatives such as the LangSems in 2019 and Online Webinars.
2019 NZALT Victoria LangSem - Languages and Wellbeing
It's not too late to register for LangSem 2019!
Please see the details below for the link to the registration form. There will be plenty of ideas, games, and activities to take away and use in your classroom, as well as opportunities to think about and contribute to the big picture and catch up with what's happening nationally (Review of Achievement Standards). This is a professional development day for primary, intermediate and secondary teachers of languages.

Keynote speakers: Angela Bland and Anne Passmore
Angela Bland is HOD English Language at Riccarton High School, Christchurch, where she has developed a multilingual and multi-level co-taught course called Pasifika Studie, in which students are able to access language study and cultural study opportunities of their own Pacific languages and cultures with community tutors, linking in with NCEA learning languages achievement standards and Pacific studies Unit Standards. In addition, Angela has created the role of Cultural Diversity Facilitator to ensure the over 80 different ethnicities of students are valued and genuinely included within the school. Angela is in the last stages of completing a PhD in Education at the University of Canterbury and will talk about aspects of her research, classroom experience and practice and how this relates to developing culturally sustaining or responsive practices.
Anne Passmore is HoD Languages at Avonside Girls' High School and teaches French. Faced with the challenges of teaching combined classes at senior level, co-teaching junior level French, and moving into a new modern learning environment which has joined with Shirley Boys' High School, Anne carried out Master's research exploring best practice pedagogy for teaching and learning in these contexts. Anne will share some of the findings from her research and experience of applying these findings to her classroom situation.
LangSem provides a wonderful opportunity to network with your colleagues in other schools and be re-inspired at the end of a long year. Morning tea and lunch are provided.
Cost: $25 for NZALT members and $40 for non-NZALT members. Free for tertiary students.

The NZALT Executive promotes the interests of all language teachers on a national level and plays a significant part in developments that affect or benefit us all. NZALT AGM
The NZALT AGM will be held during the Victoria LangSem. This will be your opportunity to give us any feedback about the new subscriptions as well as hear about further improvements which are being made to the constitution to ensure that we are meeting the changing needs of Language teachers in New Zealand. Nominations have closed for the various positions. If you are unable to attend the AGM and wish to give any feedback, please email Annabelle Sinclair at president@nzalt.org.nz

As advertised in the latest NZALT update the last term, the next webinar will be Wednesday, 6 November from 3:30 - 5 pm. The topic is "Student-centered learning and Collaboration in a Learning Languages classroom".

If you’d like to participate in one of the above but can’t make the day/time, please let Madlen know, too, and she will try to accommodate requests. Fill in this Google form to let us know what topics you would like for future webinars. Topics can range from the use of e-tools in the classroom to language teaching pedagogy.
The Google Site Integrating e-tools into the languages classroom gives an overview of a selection of e-tools, including vocabulary tools, tools to organise your online resources, Google Apps and more. The website is a work in progress and will be updated on a regular basis.
Exploring Effective Practice
The Exploring Effective practice awards will continue in 2020. If you are interested in applying for funding to enable you to visit other language teachers, this is an excellent way of providing you with funding to cover relief and travel up to $1000. To date, we have made awards to 24 teachers. There have been some changes to how the funding is paid to streamline our systems. Travel and relief will be paid for directly by NZALT and other expenses will be refunded on receipt of an invoice. Further information about the criteria for applications is on the Exploring Effective Practice Awards Application form. The deadline for 2020 applications is 7 February, 2020.
Inquiry Clusters
The NZALT Inquiry Clusters will continue to run in 2020.
If you are interested in joining one of the existing clusters in Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Timaru or would like a new cluster to be set up in your area, please contact Jeni Lemberg.

2020 NZALT National Conference: 3- 5 July
The dates for the 2020 NZALT conference have been set. We will open the conference on Friday 3 July, 2020 at 18.30 in Te Marae, Te Papa. It will then take place on Saturday and Sunday at Queen Margaret College and be followed by Language Specific sessions on Monday 6 July.
We have made a change to the dates based on your feedback from previous conferences. We hope that by opening on Friday evening and then having two full days over the weekend that this will then make it easier with planning your holidays. We kept this in mind particularly for family activities, for example, the Matariki celebrations will be taking place at this time. This also follows the model used by other subject-specific conferences.
There will be Early Bird registration of $450 for NZALT members available later this term.
We are finalising accommodation offers at present, but there will be a variety of options available from $80 per night, including breakfast, in a shared dormitory at Queen Margaret College.
We can confirm our two keynote speakers are: Dr Gianfranco Conti and Dr Corinne Seals.
There will be further information re registration and accommodation later this term. We will also publish details for the submissions of presentations.
We look forward to welcoming you on Friday evening 3 July 2020 at Te Marae in Te Papa.

International Languages Week: Week 7 (8 - 12 June), term 2, 2020
Many of you are looking at provisional dates for 2020. This year, we trialled an earlier date of week 7, term 2 as our previous date in term 3 clashed with a number of other events. Many schools have changed to this date so it will continue in 2020.
Excellent links to various activities and resources for the specific language weeks and cultural events can be found at National Events. This is regularly updated.
As you promote language learning within your school, look at the following resources about the value of language learning. There are two documents here for parents, principles, and teachers.

Tapasā - Cultural Competencies Framework for Teachers of Pacific Learners
Tapasā is a resource for all teachers of Pacific learners. It is designed to support teachers to become more culturally aware, confident and competent when engaging with Pacific learners and their parents, families and communities. It aims to contextualise quality teaching and planning within a Pacific learner setting by providing a Pacific lens to the Standards for the Teaching Profession and the Code of Professional Responsibility.
