GBHCW, GME Programs Co-host Physician Job Fairs

Throughout this Fall, the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce teamed up with the graduate medical education programs in Savannah, Atlanta, and Augusta to host its annual practice opportunity fairs. Practice opportunity fairs are job fairs where resident physicians are linked with employment opportunities at hospitals, large practices and community health centers around the Peach State.

On Oct. 3, the Board held the fair at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah where it had almost 60 resident physicians and about 15 exhibitors representing Georgia-based hospitals. The fair in Atlanta for Morehouse School of Medicine's residency programs was held at Grady Hospital on Oct. 16, and boasted around 30 residents with 20 exhibitors.

The last fair of the year will be at Augusta University's graduate medical education programs on Nov. 13 on its campus in Augusta. Click here to register and learn more information about the GBHCW's annual practice opportunity fairs.

Application Process for 2020 Loan Repayment Programs Still Open

The Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce is still accepting applications for its physician, dentist, physician assistant and advanced practice registered nurse service-cancelable loan repayment programs for 2020. These programs pay debt incurred toward the completion of educational degrees for practitioners who agree to practice or who are already practicing full-time in an underserved, rural county in Georgia with a population of 50,000 or less according to data from the most recent U.S. Census.

Physician and dentist recipients are eligible for $25,000 per year up to four years, while PA and APRN recipients are awarded $10,000 per year up to four years. The recipient must agree to a 12-month commitment for each year of the award with at least 40 hours per week of clinical practice.

The application period will run on the Board’s website until Dec. 1. All applications collected will be reviewed by the Board at its quarterly meeting in January 2020.

In 2019, the Board awarded loan repayments to 40 physicians, 12 dentists, 21 nurse practitioners, and 20 physician assistants. Overall, these programs provided 60 rural Georgia counties with much-needed access to care.

GBHCW Publishes Updated Workforce Report, Resident Exit Surveys

During its quarterly meeting on October 17, the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce voted to publish both the biennial physician workforce report and the annual exit survey results of resident physicians completing training at Georgia graduate medical education programs.

With information made possible through a partnership with the Georgia Composite Medical Board, the physician workforce report displays physician data to determine trends in workforce patterns with metrics such as geographic location, specialty, demographics, Medicaid/Medicare acceptance, etc.

Every year, the GBHCW anonymously surveys residents who are completing their graduate medical education training to gather data about projected practice plans and highlight the supply and demand for new physicians throughout the Peach State. All responses are collected, and the overall data is displayed in the resident exit survey report.
