Academics, Super Soccer Stars, Mazel Tov
November 1, 2019 / 3rd of Cheshvan, 5780
This newsletter begins with an overview of the Torah, Alef Bais, Practical Life, English, and Physical Education aspects of the curriculum.  Subsequent newsletters, be"H, will cover Sensorial, Mathematics, and Science.
Torah
Gan Aliya strives to foster in students a deep emuna in Hashem and love of His Torah. Utilizing the Montessori-style works designed by Rabbi Jonathan Rietti, the children begin to learn the 613 Mitzvos, refinement of their middos, Jewish holidays, Shabbos, the weekly Torah portion and Jewish History. These subjects teach them about who they are, where they come from, where they are going, and what their responsibilities are as Jews.
  • Left: Morah Shira  G. teaches the Toddler class about Noach and the teiva.
  • Right: Liev places the correct items on each of the three floors of the ark.
  • Left: Taly demonstrates the Dove flying outside of the teiva to determine if the mabul has ended.
  • Right: Noach (played by Tzvi) and his wife (played by Nava) sit on the top floor of the teiva, while the animals live on the middle level and garbage on the bottom.
Alef Bais
Children develop Hebrew literacy at their own pace. Using a variety of tactile, visual, and auditory stimuli to master the Alef Bais, children first recognize the letters and then begin to sound them out. After mastery of the letters and their sounds, words are read and Hebrew vocabulary increases.
  • Left: Taly learns Hebrew letters "daled," "gimmel," and "yud."
  • Right: Joseph and Nava work together to place the correct lettered ice-cream scoop on top of its corresponding cone.
  • Left: Ellie practices her kriah.
  • Right: Zoe and Leebie review the Alef Bais letters.
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan
  • Above Left: Each Rosh Chodesh Morah Shaindy introduces a new midda of focus for the month. For Cheshvan, the class learned about giving. The class brainstormed ideas on how to fulfill this mitzva. Popular ideas included giving tzedaka, using your talents to help others, giving advice and helping people in need. If you see your child "giving" at home, please send in a mitzva note so we can acknowledge it in school.
  • Above Right: Margalit and Asher wrote ways they can help a boy in a wheelchair whom they named Asher.
  • Below: In honor of Rosh Chodesh, the children made food art. They created umbrellas and raindrops since we begin davening for rain in Eretz Yisrael.
Practical Life
Practical Life exercises teach life skills. These Montessori activities replicate work that a child sees adults doing in their daily lives. The practical life tools and furniture are child-sized. The tasks performed are self-correcting. The children develop concentration and fine and gross motor coordination through repetition, indirectly preparing the child for sensorial, language and math activities.
  • Left: Maya follows a multi-step process to clean the turtle.
  • Right: Claire matches the shapes to their corresponding slots.
  • Left: Ben stretches rubber bands on a geo-board, which helps strengthen his fingers.
  • Right: Jacob transfers pom-poms using tongs.
English
The Montessori language arts curriculum is sequential, multi-sensory and phonetic based. When the teachers observe the child's readiness, they introduce metal insets (which assist the child in writing straight and curved lines), I-Spy games and sandpaper letters. Writing exercises always accompany sound and symbol lessons. Spelling and reading follow with opportunities for expressive writing available on Gan Aliya's shelves.
  • Left: Illean  pairs the objects to their corresponding pictures.
  • Right: The class studies, discusses and imitates picture cards of children displaying different emotions. This work helps children identify and express their feelings.
  • LeftThe children match objects to their beginning sounds.
  • Right: Rachel reviews letter sounds.
  • Left: Asher spells three letter phonetic words using a short-vowel cue card.
  • Right: Dahlia sorts picture cards by their beginning sounds and glues them on to paper by category.
Super Soccer Stars
Generously Sponsored by the Gober Family
The Gan Aliya Primary class has begun a new weekly program this year called Super Soccer Stars. This program helps children develop hand-eye and gross-motor coordination, athletic skills, and teamwork. They also learn to follow multi-step instruction. Plus the kinderlach are having a blast!

We thank Elianna Gober and family for sponsoring this great activity.
