If you haven't already heard about it, Peanut Butter Falcon is a beautifully shot, wonderfully heart-warming film which stars a man with Downs Syndrome - Zack Gottsagen. Zack’s character portrays people with a learning disability in an extremely positive way and is empowering. Co-stars include Shia LaBoeuf and Dakota Johnson. The film has received very good reviews and there are some showings coming up this month -

People with a learning disability and their carers can have
free flu vaccinations

The Carers Support Centre in Croydon have two drop in sessions in November for carers and they offer this advice:
Carers get flu jabs? Every winter, the NHS encourages people over 65 and those with certain health conditions, such as asthma, to get a flu jab. But what many people don't realise is that carers can get a free flu jab too.
Why bother? As a carer, getting a flu jab may not be high on your priority list. But if you catch flu, you may be out of action for a while. You will probably struggle to carry on caring. And if you do try to carry on, you could pass on the virus to the person you care for, putting their health at risk.
How do I get my free jab? With the help of local pharmacists, we are offering free flu jabs for carers at the Carers Support Centre. Upcoming dates are:
Monday 11 November 11 am - 12 noon
Friday 15 November 11 am - 12 noon
Both sessions are drop-ins. Vaccinations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information about the flu jab, visit the NHS website.
I can't make these drop-in dates: Don't worry. If you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person who may be put at risk if you fall ill, and/or if you get Carer's Allowance, you should be offered a free flu jab by your GP or pharmacy. If you haven't been offered this, you can show them the Carers UK guidance. Some surgeries do flu jabs for carers and those they care for at the same time, so it is worth asking.

There are some Easy Read leaflets about flu that have been designed for people
with a learning disability. Click on the buttons below to read
or download the leaflets:

Bereavement support at the Carers Support Centre

for current and former carers

Losing someone close to you can be a difficult time. If you are a current or former carer going through a bereavement, we are here for you. We can offer support, someone to talk to, and the chance to join a bereavement support group. We can also signpost to one-to-one counselling if you need it. Unlike other types of bereavement support, our service is tailored to the needs of current and former carers. A carer looks after a relative, friend or neighbour who needs support due to illness, disability or old age.

Our support groups
Groups are open to current and former carers of a Croydon resident who have experienced a bereavement at least four to six months before joining. If your bereavement was more recent, please still get in touch with us. We can listen to you and help you find the right support for you.

How do the groups work?
Groups are facilitated by a qualified and British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) registered counsellor. You will have the chance to talk, listen, explore your feelings and find strength.

We run several blocks of sessions throughout the year. Each group runs for seven weeks and is held on a Friday, 10.30am-12noon. They are completely free but advance booking is essential. Contact us for future dates. Groups take place at the Carers Support Centre (first floor), 24 George Street, Croydon CR0 1PB. Please note that there is no step-free access to the room. If you have accessibility needs, please let us know.
