Access Point Winter Expansion
The CAM has operated physical Access Point (AP) locations since November 2017.  Individuals and families experiencing homelessness can visit CAM Access Point to be assessed for and connected  to available shelter and housing resources. In response to feedback from  a survey that was conducted as a part of the CAM Lead Agency evaluation, the CAM Governance Committee (CGC) began discussion this past spring on how to ensure that CAM is accessible to anyone experiencing homelessness across the city. The CGC ultimately approved a plan to pilot additional test AP sites and to evaluate all of the AP site locations.

In conjunction with the opening of the winter warming centers, CAM will be opening additional Access Points on a limited, temporary basis to provide easier access to shelter. These Access Points will open November 15th and be available to any individual or family experiencing homelessness to access shelter and warming center in Detroit:

CAM Referral Data
Between October 1-31, CAM made 822 referrals for family, single adult and youth consumers to emergency shelter or a housing program.

Consumers presented at a CAM Access Point and met with a CAM Assessor and assessed with our standardized tool to be matched with the appropriate shelter and/or housing resource
.

Based on availability, CAM Staff generated an 'outgoing referral', which indicates a consumer was matched with an emergency shelter provider or to either Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) or Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) housing program. The RRH referral number also includes security deposit referrals.

The graph below breaks down the 822 referrals as Family, Single Adult or Unaccompanied Youth and which resource they were matched to.

Note: RRH and PSH are the number of consumers assigned to a housing agency, not the number of consumers actually housed.
Reading Corner
"Trauma in Plain Site"

This article in Slate looks at the prevalence of trauma in the lives of people experiencing homelessness and how widely overlooked it is. Trauma is inherent in the experience of homelessness, and yet "
the role of trauma and the resulting mental health diagnosis of PTSD is widely ignored in the homeless population, mental health experts say. The result is a debilitating, even life-threatening situations in which homeless people experience or witness traumatic events, yet the effects of those experiences go unacknowledged, undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed."
