Planning tools for Adult Learning Communities

If you attended High School Math Professional Development in October, you probably used the Lesson Planning Process (the "blue half sheet") to plan collaboratively with district or site colleagues. This planning tool and other Resources for Learning Communities are available on the SFUSD Math Website at www.sfusdmath.org/professional-learning.html.

Active Learning is Deeper Learning

Have you ever gotten pushback from your students when you move away from direct instruction? Students often perceive that they learn more from teacher-centered, direct instruction style lessons. However, a recent study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, confirms that students learn more from student-centered, active learning experiences, such as those in the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum! This article from the Harvard Gazette highlights the findings.

Opportunities for Educators

Hollyhock Fellowship
Applications are open for Stanford University's Hollyhock Fellowship Program, which is a free and fully funded fellowship for high school teachers with 2 to 7 years of experience who teach in schools where at least 50% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Any teacher who meets the eligibility requirements can apply until January 15, 2020. In addition, school leaders of the teacher teams accepted will be invited to Stanford University for a Hollyhock School Leaders Institute next summer. Read about Hollyhock’s impact and success. Interested teachers can attend an informational webinar (use the join link https://stanford.zoom.us/j/946720461) on Thursday, November 21 at 3:30 PM.

LIGHT Awards
You and your team of teachers are invited to apply for LIGHT Awards funds to fund the professional development of your dreams! The grants (of up to $30,000 over 2 years) can be used to support your growth as teachers, your effectiveness as educators, and your ability to inspire and mentor students. Applicants must complete the preliminary Letter of Intent (LOI) online by 5 PM on November 13th. Learn more at https://lightawards.org/.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Grants
The AAUW promotes education and equity for women and girls. Their Community Action Grants provide funds that address issues related to the needs of women and girls or that provide information to educate and benefit the public on those issues. AAUW encourages proposals for projects that use innovative approaches to address local community needs, build links among community partners, or build partnerships between schools and community organizations. Special consideration is given to projects focused on K–14 women and girls’ achievement in math, science, and/or technology. Find out more about Community Action Grants on the AAUW website. They are accepting applications for Community Action Grants through December 1.

San Francisco Math Teachers' Circle (SFMTC)
The San Francisco Math Teachers’ Circle is a professional community of teachers and mathematicians who love solving fun, challenging math problems. The SFMTC offers monthly Saturday meetings for math teachers interested in exploring accessible, exciting topics in mathematics. All teachers are welcome to attend. Meetings include lunch, which is complimentary.
The next meeting is on Saturday, January 25 from 9:30 AM to noon at the Proof School. Check out the SFMTC website for more information and to register.

LWEA (Living Wage for Educators Act)
Your 18 Paid Professional Development Hours for Educators (known as Prop G or LWEA) are available to all paras and teachers in SFUSD! LWEA PD Hours are meant to differentiate, enhance, or customize learning for each individual (to extend, not replace site PD). How will you use yours?

For detailed information, including what qualifies as PD, how to utilize your hours, and a link to the Passport, see 18 Paid PD Hours for Educators.

California Math Council North Conference at Asilomar
The CMC North Conference, from December 6 to 8, is an opportunity to learn with teachers from around the region about math content and pedagogy. The conference is at a beautiful location in Pacific Grove; it is a wonderful setting for reflecting and learning with your site colleagues. The theme this year is Embracing Cultural Diversity in Mathematics. Visit the conference website at www.cmc-math.org/cmc-north-conference for more information.

Discounts for Teachers at Liholiho Yacht Club
The SFUSD parent and chef-owners of Liholiho Yacht Club, a fun Hawaiian and Asian-inspired restaurant on Nob Hill, love SFUSD! To express their gratitude for all you do, Liloliho has a special offer: please enjoy 50% off all food, for up to 4 guests, at all times (until further notice). This offer is good for any employee of SFUSD (proof of employment required). It is also honored in Gen-Gen Room (their little cocktail bar with food hidden below Liholiho). To book: Liho Reservations or Gen-Gen Reservations

If you know of other upcoming opportunities for math teachers or students, please let us know!

Recent Activities

October was an amazing month for learning with and from math teaching colleagues across SFUSD! We had Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 Course Collaboration Days with a theme of "Leveraging the launch and closure to give all students access to rigorous grade-level math". We also had a focus on supporting literacy and using student voice. Teachers in Cohort 11 of the Complex Instruction program attended a follow up day, which had a focus of "CI every day". And, we worked with teacher leaders at our Monthly Math Meeting and at T-Facs.

Happiness is planning collaboratively with your colleagues!

Thank you for all that you do!
