REMEMBRANCE AND GRATITUDE

All across the world this week, communities gather in their own cultural traditions and festivals to celebrate the ancestors and honor the dead. In this season, we remember, grieve, dance, sing, and thank those who are no longer with us in body, yet whose love, spirit, and legacy continue to uplift, motivate, inspire, and transform our world.

ACROSS GENERATIONS

As we at Songwriting Works look back on nearly thirty years of collaboration and community, we celebrate everyone, who has co-written songs with us across generations.

Our long-awaited Life’s a Song album is readying for release, and we are excited to dedicate it, and its first single, “Generations,” to five passionate SW board and elders’ advisory council members: Daniel “3D” Deardorff, Marcia Perlstein, Jim “JJ” Jenkins, Andy Mackie, and Leah Hammer.

Devoted to SW’s mission, they empowered us to contribute to a culture of care and creativity, locally, nationally, and beyond. Their vision, gumption, skills, and gracious music, humor and loving example of service continue to guide us forward. May their memories always be a blessing.

THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC

One day a group of SW advisors decided to explore co-writing together. Composer and choir director Laurence Cole suggested the inspiration of a nurse log: a fallen tree which becomes home and food for the next generation of trees. Mythsinger Daniel Deardorff expanded the context, helping us sing into the paradox of life, death, and re-birth. Traditional song carrier Laura Martin pitched in to shape the melody. Soon the rest of us —diverse in age, and musical experience —were chanting the chorus, call-and-responding with ease.

“Generations,” with its folk/rock meets Latin groove, is one of last songs for which Danny did vocal arranging. He and Laurence are singing lead with SW’s Judith-Kate Friedman, Keeth Apgar, Matt Sircely, Anke Summerhill, and Life’s a Song producer Orville Johnson joining in the chorus, with Joe Breskin on lead guitar.

THE EARTH IS GENEROUS AND GENERATIVE

In this autumn season, trees sacrifice their leaves and plants lay down their bodies to become nutrients as they decay. Generous. In the spring, these nutrients become the strength and source of new flourishing and vibrant life. Generative. These perpetual cycles of life, death and rebirth form the rhythm of nature and history. Generations.

We’re in this life together. Thank you for being part of our ‘us,’ and for allowing Songwriting Works to be part of yours.

Keep the song going....
