Holiday Celebration Potluck Party

Wednesday, December 4, 6:30-9:00pm
Schaumburg (Covenant/Wellspring Church) (Map)

The holiday season is upon us, and it’s the perfect time to share laughter, great food, and friendships, old and new. Join us in celebration! We’ll be sampling some fabulous plant-based foods, tasty treats and offering up some ingenious ideas for honoring our lives in Whole Food Plant-Based style! You'll enjoy some fun and interactive activities and, moreover, you’re bound to make some new friends! Whether you tend to love "mixers" and meeting new people or are the more shy, retiring type, you're sure to feel right at home!

Here are some of the highlights:
  • This is a voluntary potluck. Bringing a dish is encouraged, but not required. If you do bring a dish, however, we ask that you include a sheet with the ingredients (for those with allergies) or, better yet, the recipe
  • This is the time for giving, and so we encourage you to bring a whole food plant- based, no oil non-perishable food item for donation to give to a food pantry. Examples include things like canned beans or vegetables, canned tomato products (pasta sauce, tomatoes and tomato paste, etc.), whole grain pasta, rolled or steel cut oats, etc. Please check the ingredients of the item to insure there is no added oil.
  • And this is the time for sharing as well. To that end, we invite you to bring a "lightly used item" (no, don't go out and buy anything) that you no longer want that you can add to our "gift blanket". All who bring an item to share will be invited to choose an item for themselves. The idea is to put a smile on someone else's heart!
For all the details and to register, visit the event page at Eventbrite.

Happy Holidays and we hope to see you there!!!

Emphasis on Lighthearted

If you have been out and about in the last couple of weeks, you probably noticed that the big shopping hubs are already playing Christmas music. By the first week of November, everybody knows that, along with some turkey and some mistletoe, Christmas carols are the alarm clock, waking us up to the social demands, hopes, and expectations of the coming Holiday season.

While for some, the holiday season mix and mingle runs like a month-long party, for others, it can be a 30+ day reminder of loneliness and isolation.

I will guess that for most of us, this time of year is an odd combination of both.  (read more...)

Why You Want to Trim the Fat This Holiday Season

Giving thanks in November is an American tradition that dates back to 1621 when, as the story goes, a harvest feast was shared between the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people, the native people of North America, who were here in America long before any Europeans arrived.

Over the next 300 plus years, while there were many giving thanks declarations by Congress and presidents, it wasn’t until 1942 that President Theodore D. Roosevelt issued a formal proclamation designating the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. (read more...)

Impossible Burgers & Beyond Meat are all the rage, and surely their positive impact on animals and the environment are unquestionable. But what about their health impact?  While such commercial products may have some benefit in helping SAD (standard American diet) eaters transition to a more plant-based way of eating, removing animal products from the diet is only one step toward a more health-promoting lifestyle. Highly processed foods are created by removing important nutrients from the food and replacing them with fillers and chemicals which can be even more destructive to health than animal products.
