From The Director
Traditionally at the end of the year we consider what’s important in our lives and in our communities, count our blessings, and seek to reconnect with our neighbors.
I offer sincere gratitude from those of us who administer the library on your behalf and humbly ask that as you consider holiday giving, you remember RHPL. Look for our Annual Appeal letter in your email in the coming days. RHPL’s historic building is in need of some expensive TLC and we are working on saving enough to complete work on the roof, paint, and porch.
Thank You for using the library. A busy library is a healthy library.
Congratulations, Amy, who was awarded the L. Marion Moshier/Asa Wynkoop Award for Outstanding Librarianship in November. The Public Libaries Section of the New York Library Association chooses one recipient every two years. Amy's nomination was supported by letters from patrons, teachers, and library trustees. Way to go!

Events for Adults in December
December brings several special opportunities for adults. This week learn about Alzheimers and Dementia with Joan Carl of the Alzheimer’s Association. Then try creative printmaking with Amy at Hands On. This is a great way to make unique and personal holiday cards and tags.
All Abilities Adults this month will meet twice. On the 6th they’ll be decorating tote bags and they’ll celebrate the end of the year with their annual holiday party on the 20th.
Our Local History Lunch this week features Stew Sommerville from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome with a talk about the Christmas-related works of Charles Dickens. Be sure to register early for this one; it will fill up quickly. Thank you to the Ascienzo Family Foundation for generously funding this series.
For the career-minded, consider this month’s Worklife Today: Professional Presentation. Maureen Aurigemma of Bard College’s Career Development Office will be going over effective resume and cover letter writing as well as the use of LinkedIn. Thanks go to Key Bank for funding this series.
Don’t miss the second annual Holiday Concert at the Red Hook Community Center Senior Friendship Center with Roger & Lenny and the RHPL All-Kazoo Holiday Orchestra. Grab the kids and come sing along with us. Funded by the Ascienzo Family Foundation.
This month’s Brown Bag Matinee will feature White Christmas, the 1954 classic with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney. Bring your lunch and we’ll supply cookies and drinks. If you’re a senior living in Red Hook who needs a ride, give us a call.
Events in December for Teens
Teens model their custom-sewn totes
Reading tweens & teens rebranded their group as the Not Just Another Book Club (NJABC.) They’re kids who love to read and share what they’re into with their peers, making reviews to build their recommendations app. All youth 9+ are welcome.
Dutchess County’s Path to Promise Initiative wants to know what youth need and want to make their lives better and more successful. Programs will be devised based on what these young people say. Be heard! Come to the second Youth Speaks conversation at the library. Ages 10-18 are invited.
Meet the Red Hook Pop-Up Library at the Red Hook High School basketball game on the 13th. We’ll be giving away books outside the gym. Go Raiders!
Teen Gaming in the Community Room continues into December. Play video games on the large screen while enjoying snacks and drinks.
Libratory 2 with Paul features science activities for youth 11+.
All Abilities Kids’ and Teens Science is meeting on the 13th.
The teens and tweens in Sewing Afterschool are finishing up their projects this month; our last class will be Dec 19.

RHPL hosts a Community Resources Navigator from Community Action every Monday. Yvonne is here to help you obtain prescription assistance, emergency help with rent and utilities, food for yourself and family, employment assistance, and more. This service is free. Talk in confidence about your needs by the stopping by the library or calling 845-876-1611 ext. 142 to make an appointment. Se habla español.
