Message from the Executive Director
Our two professional development workshops “Fostering Inclusive and Respectful Workplaces” took place in Edmonton and Calgary last week. Zenobia Jamal (Zenev and Associates) took us through some wonderful exploration and discussion of various aspects, challenges and opportunities, culminating in practical tips and information for participants to take with them. Many thanks to our partner-organizer, AMPA, and to the ACIA for providing funding for the events. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

As part of my work on the ACP library committee (as well as our ongoing projects with Alberta libraries), I’ve had several meetings with library staff to discuss discoverability and promotion of Canadian content, capacity to deliver accessible content through their lending platforms, and steps that we can take to continue to promote the Read Alberta eBooks and Prairie Indigenous eBooks collections. The consensus is that libraries are interested and actively seek out Canadian titles, but are also driven by customer demand/requests when making acquisition decisions.

We’re continuing to explore the possibilities of running an accessible publishing project, through the Accessible Digital Books grant stream in the Canada Book Fund. We’ll be in touch with our members to collect title information in the coming weeks and will share more details about the project at that time.

Lastly, we look forward to connecting with members at the two annual holiday gatherings - more information can be found below.

With best regards,

Kieran Leblanc

Reading List

After nearly being wiped out by competition from discount stores and online retailers, small bookstores are booming, with sales rising five percent over the past year, according to the American Booksellers Association. The chance for readers to engage with each other and with passionate and knowledgeable booksellers is what gives indie bookstores their edge.

Publishers are reporting improvements after untimely cuts to book orders from Amazon earlier this month. With the holiday shopping season upon us, there was widespread concern amongst publishers as to how the reduction in orders might impact their peak sales period.

BookNet Canada's report What's in Store: The State of Independent Bookselling in Canada is the first of its kind in Canada, providing a comprehensive overview of the current condition of indie bookselling in the country.

Quote of the BiWeek
“I have never felt that any author should feel grateful to us for publishing a book. We don’t publish as a favour. We publish as a business, and we consider it a privilege to publish the work of an author whose writing we believe in.”
