It's Snowing! Winter 2020 has arrived early...

The beautiful Matterhorn from Cervinia! Fresh snow has arrived in the Alps

Get ready for your next winter adventure. It may only be November, but this winter season is off to a great start with loads of fresh snow falling across the Alps and Norway. Many resorts are opening early and we've been testing out our ski legs already in Italy where the snow is fantastic, and just keeps falling! It looks like it's going to be a fantastic season for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Tracks and Trails holidays are all about adventuring off the beaten track. Our cross country skiing and snowshoeing trips are designed to offer authentic winter adventures in places you would never access on your own. If you're wondering what to do this winter season, look no further!

What Does 'Off the Beaten Track' Mean?

Get off the beaten track on snowshoes this winter

When we say 'Off the Beaten Track', we really mean it! A snowshoeing adventure with us is likely to mean you'll be making fresh tracks in untouched snow, with no-one else around. It's such a magical experience to get into the wild mountains, under your own steam and explore well away from resorts, crowds and lifts. We'll take you to little known summits, with incredible views and remote Alpine villages, where time's stood still. Choose from a centre based trip where you will return to the same hotel base each night, or break trails journeying point-to-point through in the Dolomites and Chablais region of France. Enjoy beautiful woodland and wild open terrain with plenty of time to admire the solitude, silence and winter wildlife. Tracks and Trails offer truly adventurous trips - for all abilities - to places you would never access on your own.

Snowshoeing trips are our fastest growing holidays; find out why with our overview of snowshoeing in the Alps. We have trips suitable for all ability levels, so if you've never snowshoed but love the idea of getting away from it all in a winter wonderland, read our guide for first-timers.

'Off Track' Cross Country Skiing

Why Nordic Off Track Skiing Should Be On Your 2020 List

If you weren't born in Scandinavia and took your first steps on skinny skis, the world of cross country skiing can seem overwhelming with all the different types of skis, bindings, waxes and styles. Check out our Essential Guide to Cross Country Skiing, which is designed to help you get to grips with what's what and decide where to go next in this fantastic sport. From beginner through to expert biathlete, we have all the key info you need to progress to the next level.

Nordic Off Track Skiing. What is it and how is it different from regular cross country skiing? Once you've mastered the basics of classic skiing and reached our Intermediate level, then one of our favourite ways to explore on skis is Nordic Off Track. Find out whether Nordic Off Track is for you. The main difference is that there are no prepared pistes; you travel cross country breaking trail across rolling terrain, best found in Norway where the landscape lends itself perfectly to this sort of journey on skis. Your equipment is also slightly different, with metal edged skis. Try out our Geilo & Finse Introduction to Hut-to-Hut Touring.

Nordic Off Track also means a different level of adventure, travelling hut-to-hut through the mountains and experiencing some truly wild and remote spots. Check out our four new Nordic Off Track trips this winter.

Highlight Trips - Ski the Gorgeous Goms!

Explore the Obergoms in Switzerland

The Obergoms is one of those really secret spots that only the locals know about. Located in the Wallis region of German-speaking Switzerland, the Valley of the 'Church Bells' is famous - to those in the know - for its wonderful cross country skiing. Scenic valleys, perfectly pressed tracks and Swiss efficiency with the help of the local train make this a top choice for skiers looking to improve their skills in a stunning setting. Even travelling to the Alps is easier with the new Swiss Skiing Train map. The journey of which can be as exciting as the pistes!

New for 2020, we have a new Hotel Glocke to add to the experience. This hidden gem of a valley is one of our favourite spots for beginner classic cross country skiers and improver skate skiers.
