Our November edition features two conferences that promote resiliency and healing.  On Thursday, November 21, the Napa Valley Resilience Workshop will take place at Lincoln Theater, featuring Dr. James Gordon, the founder of Center for Mind-Body Medicine.  November 23, 2019 is Suicide Survivor's Day, and there will be a free conference at Queen of the Valley commemorating those who died by suicide and to provide hope and healing for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.  Save the date for the Alzheimer's Education Conference for Family Caregivers and Professionals, which will take place in Yountville Community Center on December 6.

Most importantly, please note that flu activity in California is now widespread, which is highly unusual.  Please read the flu report for guidance on antiviral testing and treatment.  We are in for a tough influenza season.
November 23 is International Suicide Survivor's Day--FREE EVENT

If you or your patient have lost a loved one to suicide, this conference will provide a day of hope and healing, where talking about suicide and being able to process grief in a safe environment can be instrumental in the healing process.  This FREE half-day event on Saturday, November 23 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm is offered in English and Spanish, includes a continental breakfast, and features presentations about suicide loss and grief, a film, and activities.  Therapists and a registered therapy dog will be on hand to offer support to those in need.  Many loss survivors who attend and participate in a Survivor's Day event find deep connection with others who have had similar experiences and develop a new understanding of their grief, with the realization they are not alone.

This event will take place at Queen of the Valley Medical Center Main Conference Room, 1000 Trancas Street in Napa.

This event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Napa County Suicide Prevention Council and Queen of the Valley Medical Center.  Register in the link below or contact Denise Bleuel at 707-226-9838 or denisembleuel@gmail.com. Registration will also be accepted at the door.

Center for Mind-Body Medicine--Napa Valley Resilience Workshop

This is a program devoted to community-wide healing and resiliency-building on Thursday, November 21 at the Lincoln Theatre in Yountville.  This program is sponsored by The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, Resilient Napa, Kiwanis Club of Yountville and Binational Health Week.

The workshop and book talk are presented by Dr. James S. Gordon, the founder and executive director for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine.  The self-care techniques he developed for addressing long-term trauma and stress have been used world wide.  His work in Gaza was highlighted in a 60 Minutes segment on CBS.  More locally, the programs have been used in communities impacted by wildfires including Sonoma, Shasta, Trinity and Butte Counties. Long-term trauma and stress are once again top of mind as the community moves past back-to-back Public Safety Power Shutoffs in Napa County and the the Kincade fire in Sonoma County.
  • Afternoon workshop from noon to 4:00 PM (registration required)
  • Evening book talk with Dr. James S. Gordon 7:00 to 9:00 PM (general admission $10)
  • Tickets for both events available at www.LincolnTheater.org

Influenza Report

In week 45, influenza-like illness (ILI) is currently at 1.0% at Queen of the Valley Medical Center.  Statewide, influenza activity is now widespread. Public Health is investigating two influenza outbreaks which will be reported in the next flu report.

Patients with ILI symptoms who are hospitalized, severely ill, or at higher risk for complications should be treated as soon as possible with a neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral agent (e.g., oseltamivir, zanamivir) as per CDC and CDPH recommendations, regardless of flu test results.   Healthcare providers are also strongly encouraged to continue to vaccinate patients.

For outpatients at lower risk of flu complications, consider testing for influenza using PCR prior to prescribing antiviral treatment. Please note that there will be more false negative rapid influenza tests due to the higher prevalence of influenza in the community.

Healthcare providers should continue to report the following using the
Confidential Morbidity Report to the Communicable Diseases Control Program at (707) 299-4199.

  • any influenza or acute respiratory illness outbreaks
  • lab-confirmed influenza deaths in patients aged 0-64 years
  • lab-confirmed influenza ICU cases in patients aged 0-64 years
  • RSV deaths in children <5 years of age
