WINTER 2019 Newsletter

     Hello Friends!
Thank you for supporting my work!

In 2019 I painted many pet portraits, some commission works, and installed several indoor murals. When I am not busy painting or exhibiting at an art festival, I'm running my public art consulting business.

This year I developed a new series that was inspired by my visit to London's Natural History Museum. I was overwhelmed by the 300+ taxidermy specimens in the museum. Most were killed and preserved in the 1800s. Years before the crown began collecting specimens, one animal was already famous for being extinct, the dodo bird. The Natural History Museum doesn't have a dodo because the dodo was killed off by Dutch sailors, and the last confirmed sighting was in the 1660s. It was a three foot tall, fifty pound, flightless pigeon. We don’t know exactly that it looked like, but an engraving by Sir Thomas Herbert, 1634, shows the large beak and feet that we see later in an illustration by John Tenniel in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (image below). Lewis Carroll wrote the classic in 1890, two hundred years after the last dodo walked on earth. The dodo became famous for both its appearance and its demise—an iconic creature in a children’s book.
My latest series includes endangered and extinct animals coupled with piles of books. Each of my characters is reading as they sip their tea or coffee. Education gives us the ability to understand the world around us, and it affords us the opportunity to use our knowledge wisely. The animals in my latest series are either extinct, or threatened, and we have all played a role in the destruction—whether or not we are aware of it.
These works may be playful and fun, but I hope that this series reminds us to consider our lifestyle choices. We can prevent some of these animals from becoming iconic images only found preserved in museums or captured in children's books.

Recent Works & Commissions!
Juice Jar opened their new location at 6312 Covington Road in Fort Wayne, IN. They hired me to create a Parisian/Scandinavian mural (below left) that would incorporate their branding and stay within their theme. I also have some of my work on display in their new conference room (below right). Patrons are welcome to snag a photo with the mural. They can also rent the conference space for meetings.
THE ZOOKEEPER, written by Jessie Strock and illustrated by Alexandra Hall, is available for purchase on Amazon! this book includes 30 individual paintings which chronicle the transition of Harrison from a crib into a 'big boy bed'!
I did some mural work for local restaurant group, Bandidos! These pieces are located in their East State Street location. They wanted to incorporate a combination of Mexican, American, Day of the Dead, and branding into the imagery.

I am working on a second group of murals for their newest location, 'Guadalupe's Mexican Grill' which will open in late November. Guadalupe's is located on West Illinois Road and Scott Road, across from Kroger.
