Choosing Video Games for your Family

With Christmas around the corner, many parents and carers will be considering games consoles and new video games as presents for their children. But knowing which devices and games are most suitable for your children can be difficult.

Childnet have produced advice for parents specifically about choosing games for your children. They suggest that parents:

 - Talk to other parents. Are their children playing the game? What do they think about it?
 - Try the game yourself. This is the best way to really find out whether it is suitable for your child.
 - Get information from reliable sources, such as Netaware and Common Sense.
 - Trust your own judgement. Even if other children are playing the game, it is important you make your own decision for your child.

Reviewing your Online Safety policy

Have you updated your Online Safety policy recently? We recommend that this should be done annually,  in consultation with pupils, other staff members and governors. Our model policy, which can be found on our Policies page, is free to download and easy to adapt to your setting. It is fully up to date and compliant with all relevant guidelines.

Partnership with Parents Project

During 2018/19, we worked closely with a group of schools in Somerset on our Partnership with Parents Project. This group produced our Matrix of Parenting, below, and developed a range of approaches to supporting parents in keeping their children safe online.

This year, we are continuing the project and are currently developing a range of specific materials for schools to use with their parents. Our project schools have all agreed to help us develop these resources and trial them, so that we can share them with all our subscribing schools later in 2020. Watch this space for further updates!

Bullying and Cyberbullying Report

Earlier this month, to coincide with Anti-bullying week, the Anti-bullying Alliance (ABA), with support from O2, published their ‘Change Starts With Us’ report, outlining young people’s recommendations for change.

Key findings included:
  • 76% of those polled saying that social media and gaming platforms should do more to change the way they address bullying
  • 25% said grown-ups were not good role models for online and face-to-face behaviour
  • 23% said their parents had not spoken to them about bullying
As a result of this report, the ABA and O2 have made a number of recommendations for government, schools, parents and children themselves.
