What's Important this Week at Mercy High School
18 November 2019

Dear Families,

We are nearing the end of Ordinary Time, as we are now in the thirty-third of thirty-four weeks; and the daily Gospels are quite intriguing. Today, the Gospel reading recounts the story of a blind man who wants the miracle of sight. When he asks Jesus to allow him to see, Jesus tells him that his faith has saved him (Luke 18: 35-43). In truth, we all need to see more deeply.  I remember when, at the young age of seven, I got my first pair of corrective lenses. I couldn’t believe how clearly one could actually see! There was a design on our kitchen floor that I had never noticed before, and I couldn’t believe how clearly I could make out the many leaves on all the trees. Just so, as we look beyond our own needs and responsibilities, we can come to see the wider meaning of our lives in the world.
On Tuesday, November 19, there is a very important meeting regarding college planning in the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Auditorium at 7:00 pm. In addition to hearing from Ms. Cummings about the college planning process and the support that we provide, Adam Moore from the University of Mary Washington will give an overview of the college search and admissions process and Josh Saunders from The Answer Class will give a breakdown of the SAT and ACT. Juniors are welcome to attend.
It is very important for all vehicles parked on campus to have a parking sticker. Any students who are just now beginning to drive and have started to park on campus can get a registration form from campus security or the office of academic and student affairs.
Four Mercy Girls will be attending the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana this week: Natalie Vancura, Courtney Vancura, Sam Whitlock, and Kayla Thuman. They will join 20,000 young people from around the country for catechesis, prayer, and service. We wish them well as they join with so many other young people of faith.
Parents of Piano Students - Save the Date!

On Monday, December 16th at 2:20 pm, you are invited to come and enjoy some Christmas Cheer with your piano students!  We will have a mini recital of Christmas music by our piano class and we would love to have you.  No RSVP is necessary, but the piano students hope to see you all!

The Student Raffle is a crucial part of what keeps Mercy strong and every Mercy Girl benefits from the money raised. Below are helpful hints on ways Mercy Girls can sell their tickets:

  • Ask family members and friends to purchase a ticket. Neighbors are always a good source of support.
  • Reach out to outside groups or organizations that you belong to (i.e. church, or club sports).
  • Use social media to broaden your reach.
  • Reach out to alumnae that you may know.
  • Remind supporters that they still have a chance to win up to $1,250 in cash prizes.

Remember that the number one reason people support an organization or cause is because they were asked!

With Notre Dame of Maryland University, we will again be offering dual enrollment courses. One of the benefits of this particular program is that participating students will have a college transcript, which is both included with the Mercy High School transcript and can be requested from NDMU to be sent directly to another college. We have eleven courses that offer dual credit, including:
  • AP Language and Composition
  • AP Literature and Composition
  • Pre-Calculus
  • AP Calculus AB and BC
  • AP Biology
  • Honors Physics
  • Global Studies
  • AP Psychology
  • French 4/5
  • Spanish 4/5
To enroll, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and register by November 20. Each course costs $270, and a student can take up to five dual enrollment courses within her junior and senior years, which would be equal to one semester of college credit. Dual enrollment registration takes place through the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. Please make checks out to Mercy High School. If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to talk with the teacher of each course, or with me.

Finally . . .

The seniors are reading Oedipus Rex, which features a prophet who, although blind, can see the deeper meaning of things. In both Greek mythology and Christian scripture, sight is used many times as a metaphor for deep understanding and wisdom. The Class of 2020, using 20/20 vision as their class motto, reminds us that: "What we see depends mainly on what we look for." (John Lubbock)

Have a great week!

Sincerely yours,

Jeanne A. Blakeslee
Principal
