A new book by associate professor of anthropoloty Sarah Hillewaert  explores what it means to be young, modern and Muslim on Kenya’s Swahili coast. Morality at the Margins: Youth, Language, and Islam in Coastal Kenya is published by Fordham University Press. 

APPOINTMENTS

Patricia Lonergan joined the UTM Office of Communications in October as an associate editor/senior reporter. A veteran journalist and award-winning writer and editor, she was most recently an editor-in-chief at Star Metroland Media, where she oversaw The Mississauga News and provided thought leadership to over 40 Ontario newspapers. Lonergan holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in journalism from Carleton University.
Employee Benefits and Trans Health
 
Green Shield is reviewing covered benefits and in-house training and communication with a focus on trans health. They will hold three focus groups for staff and faculty for input.

Could the Apple Card make you spend more? UTM management professor Lisa Kramer spoke to Forbes Magazine about the pitfalls of Apple’s rewards program. Kramer was also interviewed by the Canadian Press the potential benefits of eliminating seasonal time changes. 
Do music lessons make children smarter? UnDark and Salon covered new research from psychology professor Glenn Schellenberg of UTM’s Music and Cognition Lab.

New Zealand’s Otago Daily Times interviewed Sanja Hinić-Frlog about her study of ancient birds. The associate professor, teaching stream with the Department of Biology, visited the Otago Museum to study aquatic bird skeletons. 

HONOURS/AWARDS

Shay Fuchs, associate professor, teaching stream with the Department of Mathematical & Computational Sciences has been recognized for excellence in the classroom with a fellowship from the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre. The UTM Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Fellowship provides faculty members with the time and resources to develop and assess the impact of innovative pedagogical strategies or teaching tools. Fuchs was honoured at the annual U of T Excellence in Teaching reception in October. 
Andrew Petersen, associate professor, teaching stream of the Department of Mathematical & Computational Sciences for excellence in the classroom with recognized with a teaching award from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. 
Congratulations to the winners of the UTM Excellence Awards! Professor Tina Malti of the Department of Psychology was recognized for research excellence. Recognized for teaching excellence are Daniel Zingaro, assistant professor, teaching stream of the Department of Mathematical & Computational Sciences; historical studies teaching assistant Anna Cwikla; and forensic science instructor Wade Knaap. Recognized for service excellence are staff members Teresa Cabral of the Department of Forensic Science; academic counsellor Sharon Marjadsingh of the Department of Historical Studies; and caretaker foreperson Luisa Melo of Facilities Management & Planning. Recipients will be honoured at a reception in the new year.
