Resources: Queensland Human Rights Act 2019

Queensland's Human Rights Act 2019 requires public entities to act compatibly with human rights when making a decision or acting. The Act protects 23 human rights in law.

Organisations contracted to provide services to the public on behalf of the Queensland Government are included under the Act as public entities, and as such they need to make decisions and act compatibly with human rights.

Community Door will keep you up-to-date with information on training, resources and news on the Human Rights Act 2019.

Community: Path to Treaty consultation

Path to Treaty is a commitment from the Queensland Government to begin the journey towards negotiated treaties with First Nations Queenslanders.

The Queensland Government is inviting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders, and members of the wider Queensland community, to submit their comments, opinions and ideas about a treaty or treaties.

Take part in the conversation by attending a community consultation session near you or make comments in the online survey.

Blog: Support for people having trouble with their energy bills

Queenslanders who are having difficulty paying their energy bills should get in touch with their retailer to seek the protection they are legally entitled to.

Energy retailers are now obliged, since October 2019, to implement new customer hardship policies that must provide clearer and better assistance to customers who are unable to pay their bill. Hardship is the term used when someone finds it hard to pay their bills.

Read the latest blog by QCOSS Senior Policy Officer Rose McGrath on what retailers should be doing to protect people in hardship.

It covers topics such as 'instruction to self-advocacy' and 'supporting someone to self-advocate'.
