Celebrating excellence at the prestigious HSJ Awards

Two organisations running services in our area have received fantastic Health Service Journal accolades.

Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust's (HCT) East and North Herts Referral Hub was named winner of the 'Community or primary care service redesign' award.

The Hub initiative was recognised for the positive impact that the project has had on patients and health and social care staff across east and north Hertfordshire. Judges applauded the team for their passion and practical steps which have freed up clinical time, enabling community teams to focus on people and personal care.

Clare Hawkins, Chief Executive of HCT said: “This is a fabulous achievement and everyone at the Trust joins me in congratulating the East and North Referral Hub team for their hard work and dedication over the previous 18 months.”

Meanwhile, winning the award for 'Acute or Specialist Service Redesign Initiative', Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust's (HPFT) deputy chief executive and executive director of finance Keith Loveman said: “I’m really proud of all our finalists for receiving this well-deserved national recognition. They have all embraced new ideas for improving our services, with passion, hard work and dedication – I couldn’t ask for more."

Abigail Firth-Bernard accepted the award on behalf of the team, together with two of her colleagues and said: “It was an honour to receive an award for all of the hard work that went into establishing and developing the Home Treatment Team. The team do a fantastic job and so being recognised in this way, only motivates us to keep up the good work."

Have you had your free flu vaccine?

The best way to prevent getting flu is to have the flu jab (or flu nasal spray for children aged two to 17). The flu vaccine gives good protection against flu and lasts for one year. See why flu vaccination is important for people with long-term health conditions.

Flu is very infectious and spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours. To reduce the risk of spreading flu, use tissues to trap germs when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often with warm water and soap, and bin used tissues as quickly as possible. Catch it. Bin it. Kill it.

Ask your GP, pharmacist or midwife about the free flu vaccine.

Launch of the National Academy for Social Prescribing

Nursing Times Award recognition
Well done to the STP’s Tissue Viability team for being shortlisted for the recent Nursing Times Awards. Their work to have a more standard approach to tissue viability across the STP and address the unwarranted variation in services available for people with leg ulceration and lympoedema/chronic oedema was recognised as ‘having the potential to have a huge impact’.

Whilst the team did not win, getting through to the final round was an achievement and a great recognition of the work done so far.
