Giving Thanks
Ellen WissNovember!! This month is one of my favorites for a couple of reasons. One, we finally get some cooler weather and walking is again a real treat, something to be thankful for. And two, we are entering my very favorite time of the year, a wonderful season of thankfulness!!

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the recent Annual Meeting, and those in attendance heard some wonderful stories and reasons for being thankful.

I also want to take this opportunity to say thank you to the retiring committee chairs and Steering Committee members and welcome to the incoming leadership.

This is also the perfect time to ask each of you to please take a moment to read the new 2019–2020 Calendar of Educational events and sign up to enjoy at least one of our great offerings.

I would like to close with a small portion of Maureen Pashke’s presentation at our recent annual meeting.

“In my life, I HAVE lived paycheck to paycheck,

BUT…

I’ve never had to choose between paying for prescription drugs or buying food.

I’ve never had to choose between feeding my pet or myself

I’ve never HAD to rely on public transportation.

I’ve never had a job that had NO PAID sick days.

Bottom line, I have NEVER been trapped in the cycle of female poverty.”

We have so much to be thankful for. If you are not already a member please join us! if you are now is the time to renew. You can also make a gift in honor or memory of someone and help us even more in this season of thankfulness. Thank you for all you do for WGA and the women and girls of our great community!

Mary

Gathered Together

We had an amazing Annual Meeting on October 23rd where we celebrated WGA’s collective giving impact of $6.5 million to local nonprofits that make a difference in the lives of women and girls in our community. We give thanks to all of our members, guests, and grantees who attended and made this another wonderful afternoon of connection and celebration.

WGA in Action

Sixty-eight WGA members have volunteered to participate in the grants process for 2019-2020. Impact Team has 9, Decision Team including Core Team, Volunteer Readers and Finance Team has 39, and Evaluation Team has 18. In total, about 14% of WGA members are directly involved in the Grants process. And of course, all of us get to vote to ratify the chosen organizations to receive funding each year.

The Decision Team held their first meeting of the new grants cycle this month. Current grantees provided perspective from their work on Breaking the Cycle of Female Poverty. Left to right: Joann Telfair, Women’s Services Director, Gateway Community Services; Vicky Waytowich, moderator, Executive Director, Partnership for Child Health; Betsy Dobbins, Executive Director, Center for Children’s Rights; Luanne Luby, DT co-chair; Gwen Gallahger-Howard, Executive Director, Helping WIN, Inc.; and Jennifer Kowkabany, DT co-chair.
Process for Grant Applications

On October 2, WGA invited eligible non-profit organizations to submit a letter of interest (LOI) for a 2020–2022 grant. This year rather than asking agencies to respond to a series of questions, agencies were asked to submit an abstract of no more than 750 words describing their program focused on making a difference in the lives of women and girls living in poverty. The LOI was due by November 1. Now the Decision Team will begin to cull the LOIs to select the agencies to be invited to submit a full proposal. Agencies will be notified by Monday, December 9, 2019 if they have been selected to complete the online Request for Proposal template. This application will be due to no later than Friday, January 31, 2020 at midnight. We are thankful for the work of the Grants Team. They are dedicated women who devote time and careful to the review and selection process as well monitoring the ongoing implementation.
