PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Susan Daniloff

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ONE AND ALL!

As a club, the SWC gives so much time, energy and financial help to those in need and November was no exception. In addition to our monthly monetary donations to local charities (this month was Stone Soup and Grateful Gatherings), our Donations Committee conducted a successful food drive all month. I thank everyone who brought food for our bins. And I know the Food Bank is extremely grateful to us for our efforts!

The Community Enhancement Committee put up “The Giving Tree,” as has been done for the past few years, to help our local schools. The “Tree” will remain up in December, so if you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, there is still time to do so!

And, don’t forget, please bring an unwrapped gift for a child or teen when you come to the Holiday Open House on December 8th! I hope to see you and your families there!

The fantastic SWCSRF fundraising event, Trashin’ Fashion, started November off on an amazing note! The student-designed and made fashion statements using recycled or repurposed materials were incredible, and a great time was had by all. Thank you to the Scholarship board for an outstanding job raising money for our deserving scholars!

Two brown bagger events, one on using household materials to wrap holiday gifts, and one on Homeward Bound’s programs to aid homeless folk, were both excellent. At an Evening with Mike Cerre we were treated to poignant stories and inspiring ideas. Our book group discussed The Overstory, our hiking group walked from Kent Woodlands to Corte Madera along the fire road, and we had another great Players performance! And that is not all! We partnered with the Rotary Club of Sausalito in providing a delicious Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon for Edgewater, Rotary Housing and Marin City Sunshine Seniors at the club!

You are a truly amazing, generous-spirited group of women whom I am so very proud to be among!!

GIVING THANKS

As I write this message, PG&E is preparing once again to shut off our power because of high winds and dry weather. I am decidedly grumpy about this, but I also realize how very fortunate I am to have secure housing and I certainly don’t want my home to burn down. So, I will adjust my attitude immediately, power on through the outage, and remind myself each day how many people and things I have to be thankful for!

I am very pleased to report that both Nancy Terry and Stacey Fraser are doing better and are both healing and getting well. Several members have now visited Nancy at the Aegis care facility and have reported positive progress. Stacey’s partner, Beth, let us all know that Stacey’s brain surgery was successful and she is resting at home. The SWC Outreach Committee has contacted Stacey and Beth and have offered to provide help and meals as needed. Thank you MaryKae Krause and committee members for this courtesy.

And, this year, as your SWC President, I am truly grateful for the privilege of gently guiding the membership through our events, programs, and fundraisers.  I am continually astounded by the depth of knowledge, energy, great ideas, and willingness to help that the women of the SWC display daily. Thank you one and all!

May your hearts be filled with gladness, may your lives be rich in friendships, may your homes and families be filled with the warmth and glow of the holiday season.

Gratefully, Susan Daniloff, President

PRESERVATION SOCIETY
Linda Hammond, Chair

We have a very special event planned for December. Please mark your calendars for December 12, 4pm to 7pm, at the Club House. We are having a "Very Posh Pop Up", featuring vintage and new luxury items: clothing, jewelry, fur coats, scarves, crystal and china, and many more.  Items that have been loved and cherished that are now destined to be loved and cherished by their new owner. (If you have something you want to donate, please call Arliss or Phoebe ASAP.) Light refreshment and no host bar. See you there!

Cheers,
Linda

SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNITION FUND
Kathi Fortmann, Chair

Did you know that in the past 56 years, your Scholarship Recognition Fund has awarded $1,135,000 in scholarships to deserving local students. Yes, it is an impressive number! It has been possible because of your generosity and support. In this Holiday Season, the board wants to thank you again for all the money you have contributed to these scholars. You came to our shows. You are a patron or sponsor even if you couldn’t come to the show. You bought raffle tickets. You put donations in the Scholarship Bowl. Thank you.

Another way to support Scholarship, while honoring a loved one, is by funding a named scholarship. The scholarship will bear the name of the person you are remembering and if you choose to, you can present the scholarship at the Annual Awards ceremony in June. Attending the Awards ceremony is a reward to yourself. When you see the dedication and enthusiasm of the students who receive our scholarships, you will be glad you came. This year the date is June 7th. Put it on your calendar right now.

A Happy Hannukah and Merry Christmas to everyone.

DONATIONS COMMITTEE
Julie Carlson & Mollie Squires, Co-Chairs

In November SWC members approved donations to two local organizations:

$250 – Stone Soup makes and serves meals at the San Rafael Homeward Bound.  This organization is run completely by volunteers who make and serve, local fresh food with dignity and respect to about 60 people a month.

$250- Grateful Gatherings – The Marin Chapter helps families transition from homelessness or crisis into a new home by helping them furnish the home – believing that families can thrive when they have a safe and comfortable home.  Most items are donated, but funds are needed to purchase new beds.

As has been our tradition, donations to Save the Redwood were made in memory of Marge Perry and Nancy Glenn.

HIKING AND WALKS
Nancy Curran, Chair

Tuesday, December 10 – 10am

HISTORIC RAILWAY WALK

Come join us for our last walk/hike this year, an easy 2 miles RT. It will be an historic walk through Larkspur on the bed of the old Northern Pacific Railroad, which began service in 1874. The electric, narrow gauge train ran 30 runs per day from Sausalito to Tomales and the section from Larkspur to the Sausalito ferry took only 15 minutes but was discontinued in 1967.

We will have lunch in Larkspur at the Farm House Local (great food) and then do a little shopping in Larkspur before our walk back.

Wear good walking shoes and bring money for lunch.

SUSTAINABILITY
Julie Carlson and Sue Currier, Co-Chairs

Why join a Resilient Neighborhood Team?

Because I care about my individual responsibility, when I heard about Resilient Neighborhoods, I joined the first SWC RN Team.

We’d love to sponsor a second team and this is why I urge you to join alone or with a friend, partner, or spouse.

I found the program to be inspiring and fun. Each session was an hour or a little more, and it was easy to fit them into a schedule. I made friends and learned a lot. Reducing my carbon footprint has become an ongoing exciting challenge. I now have all LED light bulbs. Since LEDs last 25 years, I have probably changed my last bulb. No more teetering on ladders for me. Next up one of the exciting new EV coming in 2020.

Climate Action
  • We are all feeling the effects of climate change: drought, record heat, wildfires, floods, and mudslides.
  • Each Marin County jurisdiction has adopted a climate action plan.
  • 65% of Marin’s CO2 emissions are from the residents.

As residents we can make an impact with Resilient Neighborhoods.
  • Take simple actions to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Focus is on energy use, waste reduction, water conservationshopping and food choices, and smart transportation.
  • So far more than 1,300 Marin residents have reduced over 7 million lbs. of CO2 pollution.

The Resilient Neighborhoods program:
  • Is ideal for anyone who is concerned about climate change and wants to do something about it.
  • Provides a range of actions that can fit any lifestyle.
  • Provides data on actions and assistance to help groups reach their goals.
  • Is enjoyable as you’re part of a team, taking action together.

Alice’s Tid Bits

Last year, our President Alice Merrill, began each meeting and usually events with enchanting tid bits from our historical annals. Many of us found these visits to yesteryear not only enlightening, but endearing.  So, before I took my idea to Susan Daniloff, I confirmed through many members the idea of continuing Alice’s contribution.  Susan liked the idea of continuing with the jaunt into our wayback by way of a Tid Bit in our monthly newsletter. I do hope I’m able to be as flavorful as Alice was.

A great place to start this month is directly inside of the Minutes book.  There resides a tissue copy of our beautiful front door sketch we see so often.  Did you now that it was done for the 1919-1921 Yearbook?  I didn’t.  A lovely find!

The ladies had a very creative idea for some fun for the winter season in November, 1919. “Arrangements for a series of dances to be given at the Club was presented for discussion.  A suggestion that the Sausalito Yacht Club and the Sausalito Woman’s Club cooperate and make these dances a successful social event. Mrs. Wyatt and Mrs. Laidlaw were asked to take charge of these dances and see what arrangements could be made.”  Well, after all of the planning, it was cancelled due to some plans that were not stated. What a shame.

I don’t think there is any connection; however, the current Sausalito Yacht Club web site states that it was founded on New Year’s Eve 1942? Do you suppose that is why it was cancelled?  I’ll do some snooping to solve this mystery.

Mills College Trip
to see Julia Morgan Designed Buildings
By Stephanie Andres

One of California’s most respected architects and the first woman licensed to practice architecture in California, Julia Morgan, completed over 700 projects, including The Sausalito Woman’s Club. On October 24, a sunny but windy day, nine SWC members enjoyed a tour of Julia Morgan designed buildings on the Mills College Campus, led by campus architect, Karen Fienne.

A highlight of the trip was viewing her groundbreaking work, El Campanil, a 72-foot, Mission-style clock tower. Morgan overcame gender bias with construction crews and fought to incorporate reinforced concrete in the design, which was a new technology at the time. Her design was tested in the 1906 earthquake, and El Campanil survived without a crack.

Next we toured the library which Morgan designed to continue the mission effect, using the same materials as the Campanil, with the addition of wrought –iron balconies in front and at each end.

We also toured the student union, which looks similar to our club, Kapiolani cottage commissioned by Mills alumnae from Hawaii and which originally served as an infirmary, and the Julia Morgan School for Girls, formerly the Ming Quong Chinese Girls School.

In appreciation, we gave Karen Fienne a copy of our Centennial History Book and a Preservation apron. In response, she gave us a copy the Mill’s book, Celebrating The Cultural Landscape Heritage of Mills College. We will add this book to our library.
