Veteran's Day Celebration

The South Hawks came together on Monday, November 11th to celebrate and commemorate U.S. Veterans. Students and teachers made posters, and decorated hallways and doors with patriotic colors. The South Hawks AFJROTC led an indoor parade consisting of veterans who were accompanied by students through the campus hallways ending at the Mini Stadium. Upon arrival, South Principal Fernando Reyes honored each South Veteran with a certificate and commemorative coin for their sacrifice and service.  

South Hawks Chess Team

The Harlingen South Chess team is proud to spotlight Senior Glen Rocha. The senior started with a 3rd place win at La Feria in September and placed 1st at the last three tournaments in Harlingen and San Benito. The team, led by Sponsor Diego Leal and assisted by Jacob Ortiz, has two more tournaments before the end of 2019. Good luck team! Go Hawks!

South Hawks Interact Club Gives Back

The Harlingen South Interact Club, "a Rotary sponsored service club that gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun and meaningful service projects,"  visited the Family Crisis Center of Harlingen on November 12th to donate proceeds of their October "National Domestic Violence Awareness Fundraiser". The club was able to donate $250 dollars to give back to the community. These kids are doing an amazing job! Great job, South Hawks!

South Mighty Hawk Band

Congratulations goes out to Mighty Hawk Band sophomore Daniel Hernandez, for making the Region 28 Orchestra. Daniel is a member of our trombone studio taught by Mr. Jose Garcia and will be participating in a concert on November 16th at the Performing Arts Center. He has advanced to area competition and is one audition away from making the premier TMEA All-State Band for the second time in a row! Congratulations to Daniel, his parents, and his teachers for representing HCISD!

Lady Hawks Bi-District Champions

The South Lady Hawks volleyball team won a second consecutive bi-district title. Congratulations, Lady Hawks; we are proud of you!

South Hawks Fans of the Week

The South Hawks Football team awarded Ms. Castaneda and Ms. Sullivan the "Faculty Member Fan of the Week" on November 1st and would like to thank them for all they do for the student body. The South Hawks football team also awarded Gilberto Castellanos the "Faculty Member Fan of the Week" on November 8th, and would like to thank him for his dedication and hard work.

South Hawks Football Headed to the Playoffs

For a second straight year, Harlingen South is back in the playoffs. The Hawks fought tooth and nail to earn the fourth spot in a rugged District 32-6A. The Hawks will square off against arguably the hottest team in the Rio Grande Valley in District 32-6A champion Weslaco East at 7:30 tonight at Bobby Lackey Stadium in the Class 6A Division II bi-district round.

South Hawks Choir

The South Hawks Choir students recently competed in the TMEA Region Mixed auditions, as part of The Texas All-State Choir Process. We would like to recognize the following students who advanced to the Pre-Area Competition, as well as the students who will move on to the final round for The TMEA All–State Choir. South Hawks Alumni Awarded FFA American Degree

South Hawk Alumni Megan Adair was awarded the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) American Degree in Indianapolis on November 2nd. The highest degree achievable in the Organization as it shows an FFA member’s dedication to his or her chapter and state FFA Association, community service, leadership abilities, and outstanding scholastic achievements. A degree is awarded at the National FFA Convention & Expo each year to less than one percent of FFA members, making it one of the organization's highest honors. In addition to the degree certificate, each recipient receives a gold American FFA Degree key. Congratulations! Hawk Pride, A Step Above!

South Hawks FFA Competition Results

The South Hawks FFA recently participated in the district leadership development contest. Leadership development events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication, agriculture knowledge, and FFA organization knowledge. Team and individual events reinforce what is taught in the agriculture science classrooms.

South FFA Members of the Month

Congratulations to South’s October and November FFA Members of the Month! October's FFA Member of the Month is junior Makayla Amitrani. She is in her second year showing hogs. Makayla is active in fundraisers and community service projects. She will be participating in the newly developed chapter committees and loves assisting new members by sharing her reflections on information she has learned. After high school, she plans to attend LSU for her undergraduate studies and then transfer to the University of Houston or Texas Tech to pursue a law degree. Her hobbies include raising show pigs, dancing, student government, pottery, and volunteer work. November’s FFA Member of the Month is Junior John Kibler. He is in his second year with the organization and enjoys showing his cattle, and breeding heifers and steers. Kibler participates in fundraising events, community service, Leadership events, career development events, and is also a member of the recruitment committee. His hobbies include football, showing cattle, and hunting. He plans to attend Texas A&M Kingsville and pursue a criminal justice degree to become a game warden.
