The Gift of Literacy:
How A Birthday Spent at LVGH Changed Her Life

Tutors at LVGH stick with you. They make you feel good about yourself, and I needed to feel good about myself.”

It wasn’t your typical birthday. Almost ten years ago, instead of cake and gifts, Lorraine spent her birthday at LVGH enrolling in our Basic Literacy program. “When I started at LVGH, I barely knew my ABCs. I felt embarrassed.” Originally from Jamaica, her family didn’t have the money to send her to school. As she started to make progress in her Basic Literacy classes, she decided to join our Career Pathways program for help with finding a job. After developing a resume and learning how to apply for jobs, she was hired by a local hotel. “For a long time, I struggled to find a steady job, which made it hard to support my son. Getting this job has meant so much to me and my family.” Thinking about that day almost ten years ago, she said: “I guess it turned out to be a pretty good birthday. LVGH has changed my life.”

#GivingTuesday
Consider LVGH on Giving Tuesday

Born in 2012 as a response to shop-centric holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday was created as a reminder to give back during the holiday season. This year, #GivingTuesday falls on December 3rd, and as always, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford would be honored to be a recipient of your cheerful charity. Click here to donate and help us get a head start on reaching this year's goal of $500.
We're on a Podcast!
"[Literacy]'s not just a barrier to success for the individual or their families…it’s a barrier to success of our whole population, of our whole community."

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford was honored to be featured on Hartford Foundation for Public Giving's new podcast called Disinvested: Building a Stronger Community From the Ground Up. Episode 3- Careers, Not Jobs focuses on workforce development strategies in Greater Hartford and included interviews from our very own Executive Director, CJ Hauss as well as a long-time ESOL student, Sandra. Click here to listen.
