Year End Appeal

Take a moment to view our first-ever Year End Appeal video and you’ll be reminded of the reasons why YOU come to visit! You may recognize a few familiar faces from the Manor community and learn more about the Sylvester Manor story. We hope that you’ll watch it, feel an emotional connection, be inspired to give and share the video with your friends.

Thank you in advance for supporting our Year End Appeal.

Come Farm with Us

We are currently looking to build our 2020 farm crew. We are looking to hire 3 paid apprentices for the 2020 season (April 1 - November 1). Experience is not required but preference will be given to those who have worked at least one season on a farm. Apprentices will gain experience in all aspects of operating a small-scale vegetable operation. Duties will include planting, harvesting, weeding, livestock care and farmstand operations. For more information, please refer to our website.

Give the Gift of Music with Concert Tickets

Our 2020 Concert Series kicks off with the annual January Bluegrass show! This year’s concert will feature Brooklyn’s Damn Tall Buildings. The band radiates the energy of a ragtag crew of music students playing bluegrass on the street, but anchors that energy through their instrumental chops, their strong songwriting, and their varied influences that stretch beyond bluegrass.

This show will sell out so we encourage you to purchase your tickets early.

Saturday, January 18
7:30 pm

Looking for Docents

Visiting Sylvester Manor This Fall & Winter

The grounds are open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. To visit, enter through the pillars at 80 North Ferry Road. Follow the driveway to park near the yellow Manor House.

From November through March the walking trails will be closed due to hunting. We are working with the Town of Shelter Island's Hunting Program to control the deer population. Please take notice of the No Trail Walking signs when posted.

Considering Nitrogen

On November 14 and 15, Sara Gordon, who facilitates land use, master planning and sustainability at the Manor, participated in an immersive Water Leadership Training hosted by The Nature Conservancy at Mashomack Preserve. Along with 20 other Shelter Island 'water leaders,' Sara explored Island aquifer and water quality challenges, with a focus on sources of excess nitrogen, and saltwater intrusion. Sylvester Manor Educational Farm is working closely with the Town and County to employ best practices for wastewater treatment and water supply management, and to advance understanding of hydrogeologic flow patterns.

Among the many benefits of the training, it was fascinating to grasp another significant benefit of food production at Sylvester Manor — the more we eat foods grown from our local soil, or pastured on local fields, the less nitrogen we add to the Island's nutrient cycles from outside our ecosystem. Help us close the loop: eat local  and reduce nitrogen!
