A Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends of Water Science,

CUAHSI recently completed a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategic plan.  The plan was developed by an ad hoc committee of the Board of Directors.  Contributors included Board members Jeanne VanBriesen (chair), Alejandro Flores, Michael Gooseff, Holly Michael, and Gretchen Miller; at-large members Salli Dymond (Assistant Professor, University of Minnesota Duluth), Teamrat Ghezzehei (Associate Professor, University of California, Merced), Kaylyn Gootman (Post-Doctoral Fellow, West Virginia University), Julia Guimond (Graduate Student, University of Delaware), Kevin Roche ( Post-Doctoral Fellow, University of Notre Dame),  Shandin Pete (Instructor, Salish Kootenai College ), Marcelo Somos-Valenzuela (Assistant Professor, University of La Frontera, Chile), and Liz Tran (former CUAHSI staff).

CUAHSI is committed to ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion are core values reflected in our internal culture and practices. Our vision is that CUAHSI’s commitment to DEI will strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration among water scientists by promoting the acceptance of diverse ideas and perspectives in the hydrologic sciences. The strategic plan seeks to align CUAHSI’s DEI strategy with our overall strategic planning process and to coordinate DEI analysis and actions throughout CUAHSI programming.

You can see the draft strategic plan here. We plan to finalize this plan it in early 2020, followed by the development of an implementation plan. We welcome your input on the strategic plan, as well as your thoughts on an implementation plan.

Please send your comments to DEI@cuahsi.org. Let us hear from you.

I hope to “see” many of you at our membership meeting on December 2.

All the best,
Jerad

CUAHSI's Data Down Low

HydroShare 1.27 has been Released

In this release the focus was on fixing minor UI issues as well as adding management scripts and an internal monitoring tool. Most notably UI change is the removal of the "Overview" tab from the Groups landing page to simplify the UI. In addition, we fixed an issue which forces client side code to be refreshed in the browser after a release. We also added an internal monitoring tool to help with maintaining stability of the system.

Meet the CUAHSI Community

This is the next installment of our series as we shine the spotlight on a member of the CUAHSI community.

[Know a CUAHSI member that deserves to be highlighted? Contact commgr@cuahsi.org with a nomination.]

This month's Meet the CUAHSI Community introduces you to a new member of the CUAHSI team, Heidi Happy! Heidi is CUAHSI's new Controller, and joins us from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA where she was the financial controller for 3 years. Get to know Heidi by reading more below!

What is your role at CUAHSI?
As the Controller I am responsible for all Financial Information, Human Resources, Grant/Award Management, Federal Reporting, Annual Audit, Insurance, Banking and Board of Director reporting on financial/budget status.

Where did you do before you started at CUAHSI
I have been in Accounting/Financial Management for the entirety of my career.  For the last three years I was the Controller at Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.

Where did you go to school?
I have a BS from Anna Maria College, I completed two majors in four years, Accounting and Finance.

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?
My family loves to bike, hike and fish.  We can be found at the ocean or in the mountains of New England.   I have completed a number of Sprint Triathlons and was an amateur competitive golfer on a national level for many years.

Tell us a fun fact or something interesting about yourself.
In 2000 I climbed the Tuckerman’s Ravine Ice Wall, free hand with a Don Joy knee brace in March. I was two weeks out from surgery to replace my ACL and it was my last big climb before my 9 month recovery period. I had a blast, it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done and if my son ever says “Hey let’s do this!”, my response will be “NO WAY, you’ll fall and hurt yourself!”
