NOVEMBER 14, 2019
Dear Colleagues,

Strong Start to Finish exists as a collective network of like-minded individuals and organizations from the policy, research, and practice spaces.  We connect higher education systems and institutions with proven tools, quality technical assistance and financial and human capital resources to give every student the best start on the path toward their degree.

To guide our work, SSTF is being awarded $5.35 million to spur equity-centered research, practice, and policy invention and innovation, address emerging challenges at currently supported systems, and to provide targeted technical and strategic assistance to systems preparing to implement developmental education reforms at scale.

While more information about supporting new systems is forthcoming, we seek your thought leadership to spur equity-centered research, practice, and policy invention and innovation on both the questions that need to be answered as well as the policies and practices you seek to replicate. To achieve this objective, we have created and ask you to complete an online Survey of Research and Practice Needs in Developmental Education Reform to capture your perspectives.

Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Christopher M. Mullin, Ph.D.
Director, Strong Start to Finish
On November 7-8, 2019 the SUNY held a Holistic Student Support Workshop. In attendance were members of campus communities, who gathered to collectively advance their work. SSTF’s Susan Lopez and Holly Haynes were honored to welcome attendees to the meeting and engage with institutional representatives, systems leaders and partner organizations throughout the event.

Recent Strong Start to Finish publications include new pieces of evidence shared as Points of Interest:
  • Lives Changed. (October 2, 2019). This Points of Interest shows a substantial increase in the number of students who completed a transfer-level English course when compared to a year prior.
  • Stubborn Distributions. (October 9, 2019). This Points of Interest shows that while there is an increase in the number of students completing transfer English courses, the proportional distribution of grades remains stubbornly consistent.
  • Expediting Progress. (October 16, 2019). This Points of Interest shows that students enrolled in Statway are more likely to earn college level math credits compared to students not enrolled in an accelerated developmental mathematics program.
  • Broadening Access to Enrollment. (September 18, 2019). This Points of Interest shows that providing co-requisites can give students an earlier opportunity to enroll in college-level courses.
  • Accessing College-Level Math. (October 30, 2019). This Points of Interest shows that replacing pre-requisite remediation seems to allow a greater number of community college students to enroll in college math more quickly.

Additional resources are available for free from our Resource Library.

As institutions and systems begin or continue their work to scale practices and policies, there are many organizations that are ready to help with development and implementation.  Every week, these partners in this issue space are holding meetings, leading webinars, presenting at system events and developing next-generation research and resources.

We are excited to see many of them at The Center for the Analysis of Postsecondary Readiness at Teachers College, Columbia University’s “Reimagining Developmental Education” conference later this month.  Strong Start to Finish is pleased to participate in and support the meeting which will offer an opportunity for policymakers, educators, researchers, students, and other stakeholders to come together and exchange ideas about promising reforms to developmental education.
