2// Event Recaps

Volunteers Trout Habitat Blitz

On Saturday, October 26, 2019 about 20 volunteers joined GBTU and the Neponset River Watershed Association (NepRWA) for a culvert assessment study. This was an important first step in our study of Traphole Brook, one of the Neponset tributaries, and home to our “urban” trout populations.

After a brief training the teams found culverts and crossings that are in good condition and some that an Olympic gold medalist brook trout would never be able to navigate. As Chris Hirsch asked, “Can Trout Cross the Road?”

We identified opportunities to shore up the stream banks with new plantings and will be reaching out to the adjacent landowners.  Of course, we found trash and carried that out too.

The next morning, on the way to the NepRWA volunteer appreciation breakfast, GBTU President, Rui Coelho hiked up one of these beautiful streams and caught and released his first “urban trout.”  He said it is truly special to have this beautiful stream within the greater Boston area.

Stay tuned for a warmer weather calendar of volunteer events to support our Embrace a Stream studies!
