Dear friends,
This Sunday Is the 33rd in Ordinary Time
In our Gospel passage from Luke this Sunday, Jesus and his followers are walking around the great temple of Jerusalem, this magnificent building was covered in rich decoration and the most important place for the Jews. It was the physical manifestation of their relationship with God as his chosen people. And yet Jesus predicts its destruction which came to pass in 70AD when the Romans destroyed it.
All that is left of the Temple today is its Western Wall, sometimes called the Wailing Wall which is revered by Jews as a place of prayer. Built above the wall is the Al Aqusa Mosque, sacred to the Moslems. It is the perhaps the most hotly contested religious site in the world and violence often breaks out here.
In his prediction of the destruction Jesus is pointing to himself as the new temple, because it is in him alone that we as Christians find our way to God.
