UCD ENTRANCE SCHOLARS
Very well done to Olaf Samuel, David Lawler and Cathal Maguire from the Class of 2019, who received Entrance Scholar Awards to UCD where they are now pursuing further studies in law, veterinary and science. These awards are presented on the basis of their outstanding Leaving Certificate results in 2019. We are very proud of their achievement and we wish them the very best of luck in this new chapter.
ONLINE SAFETY WORKSHOPS
Our younger students attended very informative workshops which prepared them for the risks associated with online activity. The company involved, ZEEKO, also presented to concerned and interested parents in the evening. Education is key in keeping young internet surfers safe and helping them to use the power of this amazing resource carefully and wisely.

SENIOR DEBATING
Our senior debating team, Peter, Cathal, Matthew, Conor and Luke are enjoying a great run in the prestigious nationwide Concern Debates competition, defeating CBS Thurles in the latest round. In this debate they proposed the motion "The EU needs an army", and we enjoyed a very engaging discussion and polished performance from them. Many thanks to Mr O'Brien and Ms Maher for their mentoring.
CUMANN ERST
The ethos of Edmund Rice is very much alive in CBS Kilkenny, where our Cumann ERST is spearheading positive environmental initiatives and highlighting social justice issues. Recently student leader representatives of the cumann enjoyed very engaging workshops from ECOUNESCO and they met Dan Mulhall, Irish ambassador to the USA, to whom they expressed their concerns on a number of issues. Sincere thanks to Ms Lennon and Mr Mulhall for their guidance.
SILVER GAISCE WINNERS
Well done to our students, Eoin Maguire, James Fitzpatrick and Sam Coughlan who were recently presented with Silver Gaisce awards. In order to qualify students must complete four modules all of which foster personal growth: community involvement, a new personal skill, physical activity and an adventure journey. Many thanks to Ms Ryan for her organisation and encouragement.
GALA DINNER EVENT
A great night was enjoyed at Lyrath Estate on the evening of November 2nd when supporters of the CBS Kilkenny community gathered for an evening of music, fine food and awards. On the night, we acknowledged the achievements of alumni who have excelled in their field. Their expertise in the areas of sport, medicine, education, music, law and science was celebrated. The event also raised important funds to provide state of the art facilities at our new location on Dunninsgtown Road.
BASKETBALL
Well done to our U19 basketball team who had a great season which eventually finished against Waterpark from Waterford on November 15th. The boys played extremely well and have worked hard as a team. Training will continue from December to build for the future. Well done to the U16 team who have also had a good season.
Best wishes to the 1st and 2nd Year teams in their forthcoming campaign.
The basketball department is going from strength to strength each year under the guidance of Ms Ryan (U19 & U16),  Ms Kavanagh and Ms Lennon (1st and 2nd years)
PARENTS COUNCIL
At their AGM in October, the Parents Council presented Mr Clarke with a cheque for €19,100 for the New School Development. These funds were raised at the Race Night held in May. Many thanks again to all of our sponsors for their generosity.
Life Coach Marie Fitzgerald also provided a very engaging presentation on the challenges faced by the “Sandwich Generation”.
  • The Parents Council meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, and you are always welcome to attend.
  • Finally, we wish all students the very best in their Christmas examinations.
MATHS WEEK
CBS Kilkenny celebrated a busy week of maths-related activities in October. Numerous quizzes, competitions and class problem-solving events were very much enjoyed by students. Congratulations to our winners, pictured above, and many thanks to the maths department for their enthusisam and energy.
LITERACY WEEK
CBS Kilkenny also celebrated Literacy Week in October with a packed agenda of activities. Short story competitions, debates, quizzes, library visits and visiting authors made for a very interesting and exciting week. Our younger students received complimentary copies of Hunger Games from Khan Books.

WELLBEING WALKS
As part of our wellbeing program the First Year class groups get out and about in the fresh air for some beautiful walks around the city. Physical activity and connectedness are key factors which influence our sense of wellbeing, and Kilkenny provides the perfect backdrop for these fun and meaningful initiatives.
GAA
JIM LANGTON TOURNAMENT

The annual CBS Kilkenny Jim Langton tournament was held in October. A great day of hurling was enjoyed by the participating teams, with CBS Midleton claiming the cup on the day. Well done to our hurling mentors for organising an excellent event.

FOOTBALL
Meanwhile our gaelic football teams are training hard in all kinds of inclement weather! We wish them and the hurlers the very best of luck in their efforts.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Our new council for the academic year 2019 - 2020 were elected and instated in October. Best wishes to Chairperson Ben Kavanagh and all of the council, and many thanks to Mr Kennedy for his leadership and guidance.
