From the

Headmistress
Dear Parents

This week on Rememberance Day, Mrs Collins kindly talked to our Y5 & Y6 children about the importance of Rememberance Day and in particular remembering Major Collins.  Our children were able to see his medals, learn about the different countries he served in and I hope always remember this ultimate sacrifice made sadly by so many of our armed forces to keep us safe. Since the end of World War II over seven thousand Armed Forces personnel have died as a result of operations around the world.  It was a privilege to listen to Mrs Collins and I have no doubt that Rememberance Days will have a very special meaning to all of us present last Monday.

Last Friday, our younger Junior children were extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to Nicola Beneditti play her violin in our school.  It was a pleasure to welcome staff from other schools, including our own Imogen Sellers to a teachers' workshop; and young children from a local primary joined our Y3 and Y4 to enjoy a wonderful afternoon for those involved.  Thank you Laura Gardiner for enabling this special opportunity to be available for some of our children.  It was a very unique experience for them all.

Tomorrow we look forward to an afternoon of cakes and indulgence.  Y6 have been busy planning and preparing some interesting activities for the children to support a very worthy charity, Children in Need.

Enjoy the weekend.

Children in Need 2019 - Friday 15th November 2019

Tomorrow, Friday 15th November is the annual Children in Need event; run by Year Six.

We will be holding the usual cake sale and stalls in the hall in the afternoon. Please can we ask for donations of individual cakes and biscuits (we don't mind if you are a star baker or if you simply fancy buying some ready made!). Can these please be brought to the Main Office on Friday morning. Please be aware that we are a nut free school, cakes should not contain nuts.  Any cakes that contain dairy, eggs and sesame should also be clearly labelled.

All of the children will have the chance to take part in the games and activities run by the Year 6 children during the Friday afternoon. Please can you send them with a suggested £5 in change in a named purse or wallet.

Thank you so much for all of your support. Last year, we raised a record-smashing £859.82! for a truly inspiring UK Children's charitable event; a worthy cause, close to all of our hearts.

Year One
A Monster Maths Challenge and A well-loved Story

As usual, it has been a busy week for all of us in Year One with normal lessons interspersed with rehearsals for the annual Infant Nativity. The children have been working hard in class; particularly in Numeracy and Literacy. Everyone loves the Julia Donaldson classic - The Gruffalo. With this as a focused text, the children have been taking part in role play activities, discussing the characters, reciting the lines, undertaking comprehension tasks and generally enjoying a really good story. In Numeracy, the children were set a team challenge involving all of the key concepts covered so far in Year One. They certainly rose to the challenge and there was some lovely mathematical discussions and turn taking alongside accurate answers.  Well done everyone.

Mrs Bell
Year 3
Year 3 - STEAM

Over the last two weeks during their STEAM session the children have been looking at the causes and effect of earthquakes. Since it was formed, the earth has been changing shape. Like pieces of biscuit being pushed around on top of a layer of honey, the tectonic plates that compose the earth slide, rub together, and collide. When doing so, the friction creates vibrations on the surface of the earth. During an earthquake, depending on the strength of the vibrations and a variety of other factors, buildings and other structures may be damaged or destroyed. After investigating earthquakes the children were challenged to create and then program an earthquake simulator using LEGO WeDo to test the resilience of buildings.

ISA MIDLANDS ART COMPETITION

This autumn, art work from the infant and junior department was chosen on merit and submitted to the Midlands Region ISA Art Competition, hosted by Quinton House, Upton, Northamptonshire. The Independent Schools Art Competition is held annually and is a wonderful opportunity for schools to showcase their pupils’ art. This year we are delighted that our pupils entered  a variety of art work and we are very proud of their achievements. Congratulations goes to Eva Kirk on achieving second place in the Key Stage 2 textiles category. Well done.

Year Six
Autumn Poems

Year 6 have been busy completing their poems on Autumn. They have created some fantastic pieces, included lots of poetic techniques such as rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia. They have also considered the shape of the poem and using repetition for effect. Excellent work Class 6. I wish I could share all of them.

Good Luck Cora

Good luck Cora who is preparing hard for her forthcoming National Swimming Event where she will represent the Midlands at Backstroke, Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay at the ISA Championships at the Olympic pool, Stratford.

U11 Rugby v Highfields

Due to an earlier start to proceedings, the huge crowd who took their seats from the start were treated to a great spectacle of Rugby from our team. They were running straight: they were passing: they were offloading at the right time: they were winning rucks and competing for mauls - AND a try was scored by Jack right under the posts after 7 of our 9 players handled the ball. Brilliant! What a pleasing performance after the damp squib of Peterborough last week. Unfortunately we didn’t tackle too well, gave a penalty try away for a dangerous tackle and forgot to repeat the work in the next 30 minutes of the game. The team is starting to gel and confidence is improving but alas we need to maintain the determination for longer and more sustained periods of time. We bid a fond farewell to Tozi who played his last game of Rugby for Grantham Prep and showed his enthusiasm and determination throughout - we will miss you Tozi.

Final score 5 - 53 points

Medieval Festival

Last Friday, Language Festival took place at SEK. The general theme of the festival was the Medieval Period. Every class had to choose a specific area related to this main topic. Our class 8B, presented about mythical creatures. Some of them were very mysterious, such as the witches, gargoyles and dragons. Others were interesting creatures as the elves and the unicorns. Everyone worked hard for this festival, we really enjoyed this amazing experience, which gave us the chance to improve the skills of teamwork and creativity, along with the use of English. Since we had to do research, disguise, decorate and present about these creatures. All of us are looking forward to participating in next year´s Language Festival!

Cooking Competition

Grade 7 students were invited to attend a cooking competition at The Spoon Restaurant on the Danube. Students were tutored and observed by professional chefs as they worked together in pairs. Using their imagination and best cooking skills, they had to use the provided ingredients to cook up a tasty chicken meal and bake a delicious brownie! Three awards were given for the chicken meal - Best Tasting, Best Looking, and Cleanest Cooking Area. Afterward, students enjoyed eating what they cooked and even got the chance to take a tour of the kitchen. A big THANK YOU to our parents, Mr. and Mrs. Végh, owners of The Spoon, for inviting our students and providing them a fun, entertaining, and educational experience!
