MsWas's Message Corner

Greetings Cannonballers,

Congratulations to all of our bingoers! I hope you all had fun. Check out the final bingo post to see who won the prize raffle, and please do visit our survey and give us your input for next year. That’s right, there will be a bingo for CBR12, I can guarantee that. So let us know how this year went for you, then we can make next year even better.

I want to thank all of you as well, everyone reading this newsletter. It’s thanks to you and your support that we are able to keep CBR running. It’s fundraising time for us, and as much as I wish we could operate for free everywhere, we all know that’s not the way the world works. So I’m passing the hat and asking for donations. We do have a lovely prize pack that every donor will get a chance at, now valued at approximately $300.00. Good luck!

Take care and Happy Reading!

MsWas

Q&A with a Cannonballer: MarkAbaddon

Your bio says you sought out CBR to use writing as a release from the stress of the political atmosphere, which is a great reason! Have you found it helpful?

As the ant said when pissing into the ocean, "Every bit helps." Honestly, the political environment is so toxic and upsetting right now, I believe we all need multiple mechanisms to cope. Writing does help. So does alcohol.

CBR Bingo

Bingo was great fun this year, with 49 players, 34 bingos, and 16 blackouts. Those 49 people wrote 729 reviews in four months! Thanks to everyone for reading, posting, commenting, reviewing, and playing. Congratulations to CarrieJay, who won the raffle prize!

If you missed it, there's a recap post and a survey. Please tell us what you'd like to see (or not see) in next year's Bingo!

Holiday Book Exchange

You know what's better than discovering new books? Having a fellow Cannonballer pick some new ones especially for you! If you're interested, sign up for our annual holiday book exchange. The ever-intrepid faintingviolet will compile the list and randomly assign pen pals to all participants. Choose a book or two, and an additional piece of flair if you'd like (budget no more than $25), and mail it off to your book buddy. A different participant will mail you something in return, and the circle of books expands and delights!

#GivingTuesday and CBR's 33 Days of Giving

Y'all are awesome all year round, and once again this year for #GivingTuesday, we're asking for a little more and giving back a little. If you donate any day in November or the first three days in December (because that's when #GivingTuesday ended up since Thanksgiving is at the very end of the month), you'll be entered into a raffle for a fun prize drawing. Check out Mswas' post for more details, and as always, thank you for your support!

Best & Worst

It's time to go back through your reviews from the year and start thinking about your five stars and one stars. MsWas will be asking for your Best and Worst of 2019 next month. If you can winnow it down to the three best and one worst book you read this year, all those will be compiled into the year-end recap post that will go up on Pajiba. For a blast from the past, check out the Top Ten Cannonball Read Reviews of 2009, the first CBR listicle, or even just browse last year's picks and see what you might have missed.

Coming soon: CBR12

Believe it or not, we are heading in to our dozenth year of Cannonballery. Next year will see some old favorites (Bingo is obviously a keeper) and some new stuff (website updates ahoy!), so we hope to see you all back here to join us. Tell your friends! Peer pressure your family! The sign-up page goes live in early December, so stay tuned for more details. If you're interested in helping out in CBR, drop Mswas a line

Book Exchange Sign-up 2019 – Let’s Gift Books!

Nov 14, 2019 09:33 am
After our biggest exchange ever last year we’re bringing back our voluntary Book Exchange and with the help of Emmalita I’ll be handling the organizational components once again. It’s a lovely part of our community here at CBR and a great way to get to know a fellow Cannonballer a little bit better. It’s also a great excuse to share a little holiday cheer and do some spending through the Cannonball Read Buy Hole. (Remember, any funds generated through the Buy Hole are in turn donated to the American Cancer Society to fight cancer). Those of you who have participated in the past will […]

Utopia was here at last: its novelty had not yet been assailed by the supreme enemy of all Utopias—boredom.: vel veeter's review of Childhood's End

Nov 14, 2019 09:28 am
This is a short novel from 1953 by Arthur C Clarke, of course well known for 2001: A Space Odyssey. This is the first novel of his I’ve read and I am currently reading another as well. This book starts with the arrival of a series of gigantic spaceships coming to Earth and an immediately becoming a controlling faction. Rather than a dangerous presence, the ships purport to be benevolent, and begin fixing humanity’s ills. There’s a few strange incidents involving animal cruelty, racism, and other little fixes that happen. The Overlords, as they are known, remain hidden within their ships, […]

Not the most Pratchetty of Pratchetts, but solid: Bothari43's review of Eric

Nov 14, 2019 08:21 am
A friend recommended the podcast Myths & Legends, and I chose to start with the two-part episode on Faust and Mephistopheles, because I have a sculpture of those two that I absolutely love (pictured). The episode was great, and inspired me to reread Pratchett’s Eric, which has barely anything to do with the Faust story, but is still a damn fun ride. Eric is a horny teen gothling, trying to summon a demon to grant him all his wishes. Rincewind is a terrible wizard (in that he’s bad at it, not that he’s a Great and Terrible Wizard) who was stuck […]

Is this put in the YA category because publishers think sexy faeries aren’t serious enough to be in the ‘adult’ fantasy section?: Dome'Loki's review of A Court of Mist and Fury

Nov 13, 2019 07:29 pm
The most recent YA books I’ve read are Suzanne Collin’s ‘Hunger Games’ trilogy and Victoria Schwab’s ‘Monsters of Verity’ duology.  Were there heated, passionate moments in those books, yes.  Was there spine tingling sex scenes, nope.  I had the assumption that full on sex was part of the dividing line separating YA from other categories.  But if that is the case, then this series is in the wrong section.  I can’t help but wonder if a decision was made that impossibly attractive faeries having sex was not serious enough to put it in the ‘adult’ fantasy section.  A Court of […]

Belts and Braces, Beloved: emmalita's review of Guilded Cage

Nov 13, 2019 06:28 pm
Any Old Diamonds, the first book in the Lilywhite Boys series was one of my favorite reads this year. KJ Charles’ follow up book, Gilded Cage, has been one of my most anticipated. I will try not to spoil Any Old Diamonds too much, because I think you ought to read it, and you must definitely read it in order to appreciate Gilded Cage. Not all is right with the Lilywhite Boys after the Ilvar affair.  Templeton Lane is feeling resentful about what happened during the heist, about Jerry and Alexander’s Happily Ever After, and about Jerry’s unwillingness to continue their life […]
