Metro21 Named Among Top 100 Smart City Partners

Newsweek selected 100 Smart City partners across the globe who are "taking action, initiating projects to enacting real change, and doing something bold and unique to lead us into the land unknown." Metro21 was among the 100 Smart City partners along with Carnegie Mellon University Africa and Carnegie Mellon partners like Argo AI. See the full list >>>

Secretary Chao Celebrates Traffic21's
10th Anniversary

On November 7–8, 2019, Traffic21 celebrated its Tenth Annual Anniversary Symposium. The symposium focused on solving future transportation solutions, particularly focusing on how innovations help people from all economic and social backgrounds under the tagline “Mobility for All.” The symposium brought together expert panelists, keynote speakers and attendees from industry, academia and government to experience a packed agenda including a lunch that featured keynote speaker, Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao and included remarks from PA Congressman Mike Doyle, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh Mayor, William PedutoLearn more about the symposium and Metro21's role >>>

Smart Traffic Signals Take Flight 

Next time you’re at the Pittsburgh International Airport, check out the new Metro21 display near Gate A10! The display showcases showcases the partnership between Carnegie Mellon and Allegheny County by highlighting the benefits of smart traffic signals and Surtrac technology. Read more >>>

Expanding the Smart City and Connecting
with Rural Communities 

A collaborative team led by Carnegie Mellon University, including Metro21, is helping to change the landscape of rural transportation in Southwesten Pennsylvania's Greene County. Through a US Department of Energy grant, CMU is partnering with regional stakeholders, including Waynesburg University (WU) for a more sustainable and equitable future.
In October, Metro21 welcomed WU President Douglas Lee and his colleagues to CMU. The day was packed full of collaborative meetings and opportunities to learn from one another, including a Lunch & Learn focusing on WU's unique service model and the potential for rural/urban co-creation and collaboration.
Metro21's Executive Director, Karen Lightman and President Lee also sat down for the Metro21 Podcast to discuss how higher education can give students the tools and ambition to change our communities.
