Pumpkin ReHarvest Promotes Re"Cycling"

A small, dedicated group of volunteers took to the streets the morning of November 3rd with the goal of collecting as many perished pumpkins as possible. We used bicycle trailers, pickup trucks, and Earth in Hand’s dump trailer that we eventually filled with pumpkins! According to the US Department of Energy, of the nearly 2 billion pounds of pumpkins grown in the United States, an estimated 1.3 billion pounds go to the landfill annually. We believe that pumpkins should be eaten or at least composted! To reduce waste and recycle pumpkins, Soil Cycle decided to take them to a farm that supports both local agriculture and sustainability. Turner Farms uses pumpkins as an environmentally friendly and free alternative to animal feed. A week after the event, their farm owner said that their goats were, “In squash heaven! Pumpkins are so high in vitamins and nutrients that we believe that’s why our animals are so healthy!” We are thankful for a successful event and can’t wait to make it better next year!

Fantastic Mr. Folk

On November 2nd, smells of home cooked meals wafted out of Free Cycles as Soil Cycle and 1000 New Gardens members prepared for the night’s fundraiser. This year’s fundraiser was a joint effort with 1000 New Gardens and Free Cycles. The groups served delicious food while three fantastic folky bands played throughout the evening. Local bands, Mr. Mr., Fertile Crescent, and The Spills donated their time to the event. Outside a bonfire burned as people had fun smashing pumpkins that would go into our compost bins afterwards. People filled up mugs of foamy beer, got their faces painted, and danced throughout the evening.  Local organizations donated silent auction items to the cause, making for a fertile event all the way around.  Thank you to all the amazing people who came, helped, and supported us during the event. If you missed the event, we would love to have you donate. You can donate online, or via Venmo @soilcycle.

This Autumn, our new location allowed us to collect and store leaves for Spring composting. Leaves are one of natures many blessings. Fall leaves serve as a quality carbon (brown) source to compost piles and make for easy, wonderful mulch! They contain nutrients extracted from the soil, so they are high in nutrients and break down into a delightful soil amendment. So, if you still have bagged leaves from an un-sprayed lawn, we’d be happy to take them.

Winter Market!

We are excited to announce our presence at the Missoula Valley Winter Market! After the summer season of preparing and building compost bins, we are ready to offer a finished product. We will be selling bags of worm compost, Soil Cycle memberships, and later in the season, Bokashi bran. Please follow us on Facebook or email us to find out what dates we will be there.

November & December Goals

1. Expand space/move worm bins
2. Sell Bokashi at the Market
