MISSOURI HOSA STATE OFFICER TEAM PROGRAM OF WORK REFLECTION
Please see the message below from Hallie Holst, the Missouri HOSA 2019-2020 State Secretary regarding a reflection of the State Officer Team’s accomplishments to date.

This fall has been Missouri HOSA’s most productive season yet! The State Officer Team has been hard at work preparing for the remainder of the year, and while we are excited for the upcoming events, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the outstanding things our state has accomplished thus far.

As the State Officer Team sat down to plan the 2019-2020 Missouri HOSA State Officer Team Program of Work, we decided chapter visits would be a top priority. So far this year, we have visited eight chapters across the state of Missouri! Maddie Merrill, State President, has visited Affton High School, Marquette High School’s Officer Team, Marquette High School’s general chapter, Timberland High School, and Mehlville High School. She is honored to have met with the exceptional leaders that comprise Missouri HOSA. With topics spanning from the general HOSA message to emotional intelligence, she has truly seen how HOSA has allowed a group of people with similar passions to come together for the betterment of the healthcare community. Kate Mallery, State Historian, has visited St. Clair High School and Lake Career and Technical Center. She was able to provide members with information about the opportunities that Missouri HOSA offers beyond the local level and information regarding teamwork’s important role within a HOSA chapter. Each visit was rewarding and beneficial for all involved. Hallie Holst, State Secretary, visited Cameron High School. She had the chance to speak with the chapter about effective communication within a team and the further leadership opportunities that HOSA provides. She is excited to see the Cameron chapter’s future success!

The State Officer Team had the remarkable opportunity to attend the Washington Leadership Academy (WLA) held in Washington D.C. in September. The 2019 WLA was an experience each officer will not soon forget. It brought the perfect blend of valuable learning and fun. The message of what it truly means to be an influential leader was extremely beneficial and will be utilized in the lives of each state officer. A major highlight of the few days spent in Washington D.C. was the rewarding opportunity the State Officer Team had to advocate for Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs). We traveled to Capitol Hill and met with many state representatives and senators to pass on how powerful HOSA is in the lives of its students. There are many exceptional aspects of WLA, but the State Officer Team can easily agree that the most valuable aspect is getting to connect with other state officers. Listening to the spectacular ideas and events that other states hold, helped immensely in planning for our own upcoming events and conferences.

As we reflect on this year’s Fall Leadership Conference (FLC), all that comes to mind is excitement and joy. FLC is always the State Officer Team’s favorite conference because we get to see firsthand how intelligent and hard-working the Missouri HOSA members are. Networking with our members and getting to help chapters organize and maximize their efforts is the most rewarding task the State Officer Team is privileged to take on. Over the course of the two-day conference, the goal was to provide the tools and inspiration necessary for Missouri HOSA members to become sure-footed servant leaders. Breakout sessions that revolved around communication, meeting procedure, conflict resolution, and general HOSA knowledge, helped to achieve this goal. Due to the passion and motivation of Missouri HOSA’s delegation, this goal was not only met, but surpassed. From every workshop presented to each song played at the Lip Sync Battle, Missouri HOSA members brought the kind of excitement that ensures success.

Shortly after FLC ended, Maddie Merrill, State President, and Edward Toderescu-Stavila, State Postsecondary/Collegiate Representative, traveled to the National Health Science Conference sponsored by the National Consortium for Health Science Education (NCHSE) in Saint Louis to speak before dedicated health science educators about the great things HOSA does. Missouri HOSA thanks NCHSE for their continued support and we cannot wait to see their relationship with HOSA flourish over the upcoming years.

Thank you for your excellence thus far Missouri HOSA, we look forward to all of your further accomplishments!
HOSA WEEK HIGHLIGHTS
Thank you to SO many chapters who celebrated a successful HOSA week at the local level.  From dressing in professional healthcare attire to sporting the colors of our HOSA Service Project partner, the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, HOSA members spread the word to others that they are indeed our Future Health Professionals!

The State Officer Team challenged local chapters to spell out HOSA in a creative way through the #HOSAWeekChallenge.  Featured below are entries from Grain Valley High School, Kearney High School, Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, and Rolla Technical Center!

TAKING DOWN TOBACCO: WAYS TO EDUCATE STUDENTS ABOUT JUULS AND VAPE
Educators all over the country have witnessed the return of Big Tobacco.Youth e-cigarette use has skyrocketed to “epidemic” levels. Altogether, 5 million middle and high school students use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in high school use between 2017 and 2019. E-cigarettes are addicting a new generation of youth and threaten to reverse decades of progress in reducing youth tobacco use.

HOSA-Future Health Professional’s partner, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, with the generous support of the CVS Health Foundation, have resources for middle and high school students.
  1. The online course, The Rise of Vaping, is available in the Taking Down Tobacco training program. In this 20-minute course, students hear from former and current e-cigarette users about nicotine addiction, learn the facts about vapes like JUUL, practice their refusal skills, and find out what action they can take.
  2. The Rise of Vaping is also offered as a 20-minute video on the Taking Down Tobacco website (no account is required). The video version can be used in classrooms, assemblies, trainings, conferences, summits, etc. An optional group activity can be downloaded and facilitated after the video to help students practice their refusal skills.
How educators are using The Rise of Vaping course and video:
  • Teachers are requiring students to complete the online course in the classroom or on their own time by a deadline. Certificates of Completion can be printed or screenshot as verification. (Teachers are also making the course optional for extra credit.)
  • Teachers are using the video in the classroom and facilitating the group activity, and/or having a discussion about e-cigarettes, as part of a lesson plan.
  • Schools are utilizing the Rise of Vaping course and/or video as a requirement for students that are found vaping on campus as an alternative to suspension.
  • Schools are showing the video during an all grade or all school assembly.  Then, teachers facilitate the group activity in their classrooms.

CENTRAL METHODIST UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM
Love helping others? Enjoy watching people succeed? Have an interest in sports or working with physically active individuals? When considering a career in health care, consider becoming an athletic trainer!

Athletic trainers (ATs) work as part of a health care team and in collaboration with physicians to provide medical care. ATs are highly qualified, multi-skilled professionals who provide services including injury and illness prevention and wellness promotion; examination, assessment, and diagnosis; immediate and emergency care; therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation; and health care administration.

ATs are sometimes confused with personal trainers. There is, however, a large difference in the education, skillset, job duties, and type of patients seen by an athletic trainer and a personal trainer. Unlike personal trainers, ATs follow a medical-based education model and must graduate from an accredited program prior to taking a board examination. Education also includes both classroom and clinical settings using a competency-based approach. More than 70% of ATs have a master’s degree.

To learn more about the accelerated master’s degree program in Athletic Training at Central Methodist University, please see our flier! Want to know more? Email us at athletictraining@centralmethodist.edu
