Win-Fu Training Newsletter #42

Hello dear apprentices!

Hi All!

In this newsletter you will find some NEWS, TIPS and SUPER-OFFERS that need fast reactions ;)

IGNITE 2019 is done!

I have no idea yet on scores (I'm not competitive at all as you all know) :) But I know I was happy and that my evals were VERY good. Until now I have around 500 evals with a score of 97+ out of 100. I did two sessions and you can view them here:

On the second one I showcased a unfixed vulnerability ;) Check out the video and https://blog.win-fu.com/ for more information. The beef here is that you can see all file names on a share that explicitly denies you access. That should be ABSOLUTELY NONO for NTFS, which is considered holy when it comes to securing your files. But Hey! Microsofts official answer is: "Filenames don't need to be protected, only file content is". COME ON!! My file named "Firing all Helsinki office employees" would not cause a problem? Or "Company XXX IPO calcultaions.xlsx" - no one would be interested??

If you ask me that's like saying that reading everyones email subject is just fine as long as you don't open it!

TIPS & TRICS

I will, about 100 times in a session, all the time increase the size of my fonts in CMD or PowerShell. On the session that I showed tips I learned from my students I also sais that there is this annoying moment I call "The dreaded student hand moment". It's when you say "Well you can't do this" and instantly a hand rises from the audience... And you know they know something you don't.... #facepalm
I had this but luckily after the session on Twitter... When I got a tweet from a follower (I would credit it here if I could find the Tweet): "Maybe I should tell Sami that since 1903 you can use ctrl + scroll wheel in cmd.exe" ... Damn... THAT IS GREAT! I've needed that for ever so I am humble and happy to learn this! And it of course works on PowerShell as well as the feature is part of CONHOST.exe and not part of cmd.exe or PowerShell.exe.

After these sessions I've hosted there are MILLIONS of questions about when my classes are available. Lately mostly about when US TimeZone classes would be available. Well, some time ago I posted a 75% OFF opportunity for my WIndows Internals class, AND NOW IT'S ON FOR US AS WELL!!

Here are the links! Timinig is FAST, places are LIMITED and prices are WAY DOWN!!

I'm currently in Key West but in two days I drive up back to Orlando for Techmentor that is part of the bigger Live360! It's been my favorite conference since 2006 as an attendee, 2012 as a speaker and 2017 as the co-chair of the conference! You should get there and really learn STUFF ;)

Wax On, Wax Off – Happy troubleshooting!
