Agency Spotlight: The Council on Recovery
Healthy Women Houston is a collaboration among seven agencies committed to improving maternal health in Harris County: Avenue 360 Health & Wellness, Community Health Choice, The Council on Recovery, Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, HOPE Clinic, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, and Memorial Hermann Health System.
The Council on Recovery is Houston’s oldest and largest nonprofit organization providing prevention, education, treatment, and recovery services to all who are adversely affected by alcoholism, drug abuse, other addictions, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Founded in 1946, the Council is the leading provider of support, information, and outpatient treatment for substance use disorders in Houston and works to keep our community healthy, productive, and safe. The Council on Recovery has a long history of serving as a community linkage and navigation system, for providing out of the box community based programs and services, and stands firm on meeting people exactly where they are.
The health of women before pregnancy can be compromised by multiple unmanaged and untreated health problems. Left untreated, these conditions can be the source of severe complications at childbirth or after delivery, threatening the lives of women. Based on data from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey for Harris County, substance use, depression, and other mental health issues play a weighty and significant role in compromising the woman’s health.
