Good Morning!

The highlight of my week was unquestionably the party we had Wednesday night to celebrate 10 years of The Colin McEnroe Show. We had a pretty packed house over at Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford. I got to meet whole bunches of listeners -- lovely, thoughtful-seeming people, each and every one. A few squinted at my name tag and, visibly doing some translation in their heads, said, “… McPants?” A few pitched me good show ideas about local music and public murals and other things. Point is, we couldn’t do our weird, little show without our lovely, thoughtful audience. So thank you.

NEED TO KNOW
  • Connecticut Senate Republicans want to use nearly two-thirds of the state’s $2.5 billion in budget reserves to help finance an ambitious overhaul of the state’s aging transportation infrastructure -- minus tolls and new taxes. While GOP leaders acknowledged that the plan assumes some risk -- the state could lose borrowing capacity in several areas -- tolls weren’t acceptable to either Republicans or Democrats.
  • Connecticut public health officials reported the first two flu-related deaths of the season. Both people were 65 or older and came from Fairfield and Litchfield counties. Health officials urge everyone to get a flu shot, especially the most vulnerable: children under 5, people 65 or older, and those with chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
  • The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is celebrating black cultures, experiences and traditions with a collection called Afrocosmologies: American Reflections. The exhibit features more than 100 works of art, from sculptures and quilts to paintings and photographs, with some pieces dating to the 1800s.
  • An opportunity to hear one of the peaks of the operatic repertoire this weekend, and the voice of a rising star. Fresh from his Met debut, Errin Duane Brooks joins Connecticut Lyric Opera to tackle Tristan und Isolde.

Parents Demand Answers On Possible PFAS Exposure From Water At Canton School

Parents in Canton came out in force this week looking for answers to their concerns about possible PFAS contamination of Cherry Brook Primary School’s water supply.

Town officials said the matter came to light a couple of weeks ago when they learned that firefighting foam containing PFAS was used at the elementary school five years ago during a training exercise. They hosted a meeting with state officials to address parents’ concerns about the effects of the family of man-made chemicals, which may be toxic to humans.

Many of the parents wanted to know exactly what their children, both current and former students, may have been exposed to after the incident, but officials had few answers.

They said they won’t know much until the results of water and soil tests come in, and that could take up to four weeks. In the meantime, a large tank outside the school is now supplying water to the building while officials await the test results.
