You're hired!

You're hired! is a game conceived of by Mr. Kevin to help the Play Captains understand what it really takes to get each of them hired and on-boarded so they can start their job working afterschool in an early childhood center.

The goal of the game, modeled after the ACTUAL on-boarding process we go through to place the teens, is for each participant to place a team of 8 Play Captains in 4 early childhood centers. Each player, must build their team by "emailing", "calling" and "texting" prospective teens (the green cards); then they have to get AND PAY FOR clearances for all their team members, get physicals (which are free thanks to a partnership with the Drexel Health Hub!) and PAY FOR uniforms. Only after all team members have done these three things, may they be placed in a center. The winner is the person with the most Play Captains placed in the centers. But it's not as easy as you think!  In each round, the players have to select a card (the pink ones) indicating whether the Play Captain is late (
only advance one teen), absent (lose a turn), quit (put back one of the teens into the pile) or is FAB (advance two teens).

Pretty quickly the teens started to realize that this is what actually happens and they were able to identify feelings of frustration when a Play Captain was "late" or worse yet, when they "quit" because they had spent their money on that teens who ultimately won't continue working at the center, thereby reducing their chance of winning the game (and, as they expressed: wasted their money!)

We've played the game twice and plan to make some adjustments based on the feedback the teens gave us.  This game is a great example of the playful learning elements we've been working to incorporate into our programming.

Learning is playful when it is: FUN! As well as socially interactive and engaging. And play can help develop these "Six Cs": Confidence,  Creative Innovation, Content, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking.  We think that's pretty "fab"!
