Harvest 2019 – Winemakers Predict “An Excellent Vintage”

The 2019 wine grape harvest in Calistoga is officially complete and it’s been described as “near perfect.” This is a remarkable accomplishment considering the challenges faced by Calistoga wineries during the past month.

Heidi Barrett, Winemaker/Owner of La Sirena Wines and Barrett & Barrett Wines, praised the production and vineyard crews who labored for the past nine weeks under “extremely stressful, difficult conditions.” Heidi said it was a long, steady harvest that lasted from Sept. 3 to Nov. 1. She’s impressed with the quality and said this was “the best string of fall weather I can remember.”

While Heidi said her volume was normal, Jona Mendoza-Fabiani, Estate Director of Clos Pegase Winery, said the yield was slightly down compared to last year. “But it’s still above the long-term average for the majority of the varietals.” Jona added, “The brix were slightly higher than last year, resulting in wines with a fuller body and higher alcohol levels.

“From veraison onwards the fine weather gave us even ripening, without brix spiking too early,” he said. “The acids held on giving us wines that will show intensity, balance and robust tannins.”

Karen Cakebread of Ziata Wines said she’s very excited about the quality of the vintage. “Although we had a later start in the spring than normal, most of our picks were tracking closely to 2018,” she said.

“Mother Nature provided the grapes lovely summer temperatures that allowed for a long hang time to obtain perfect ripeness. We completed harvest on Oct. 22 and are thrilled with what we’re tasting in the tank.”
