PLEDGE PROGRESS

The BAJC membership committee has been tracking “gifts from the heart” for  5780 membership.  The good news is we have received a little over $40,000 from about 50% of our members.   Of course, it’s still early in the year, and all we need by the end of the year is about $29,000 to meet our budgeted expenses. It really is important that we hear from every one of our members so we will know who you are and what we can expect in the remainder of the fiscal year.  So if you have not sent in your pledge form yet—the very pledge form that tells us that you indeed wish to be a member—please do so as soon as possible.  If you’ve misplaced it, Faith will gladly mail you another one—or you can contact her and she’ll take your confidential information over the phone or by e-mail 802-464-2632 or faithschuster85@gmail.com

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
NOW CHANGED TO:

Instead of the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, we will be holding a service of Thanksgiving and blessing for the First Baptist Church and congregation on Tuesday, November 26.  As you know, this church hosted the Overflow Shelter for many important years and we want to recognize and give thanks for their tremendous contribution to our community.  We hope for a large interfaith presence!

Blest be the tie that Binds:

An Interfaith Service of Gratitude and Blessing for the First Baptist Church of Brattleboro

Tuesday, November 26 at 7 pm at the First Baptist Church, 190 Main Street

On Tuesday, November 26, the First Baptist Congregation will celebrate their last service at the First Baptist Church in Brattleboro before moving their congregation to another setting, 18 Crier Drive, Brattleboro.  All people are invited to an Interfaith Service of Gratitude and Blessing in remembrance and celebration of the history and witness of this congregation in this church over the last many years, particularly the ministry of the Overflow Shelter, that was housed at the First Baptist Church for nine years.  Please bring a canned food donation for Project Feed the Thousands.  This service is sponsored by the Brattleboro Interfaith Leaders Alliance.

FEED THE HUNGRY

With winter in the air, gratitude for our homes takes on extra poignancy. For those who don’t have a home, the Brattleboro Seasonal Overflow Shelter provides evening meals and nightly beds for local homeless people at the Winston Prouty Center on the Austine campus. From November to May, BAJC has the privilege of preparing and serving meals once a month for SOS residents. Here are five great opportunity to feed the poor.   BAJC’s dates for preparing and serving home cooked, belly-filling, heart- warming meals are Thursdays:  Jan 2, Feb 6, Mar 5, April 2, and the very special Christmas Eve dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 24th. Sign up with saintrosner@gmail.com or at the sign-up link:

Directions: take Maple Street in Brattleboro to Austine Drive. Turn between stone pillars onto Austine Drive and take the second left. This will bring you past some parking to a low brick dormitory on your left, just before the massive Winston Prouty Center. Park anywhere and enter the dormitory down the flight of exterior concrete stairs. Knock if the door isn’t propped open:) Once inside continue down the flight of stairs, and turn left. This is where the kitchen and dining area are located for serving the SOS meal.
A WISH:  Help BAJC Purchase a New Stove

We're hoping to buy a new induction stove for our synagogue kitchen.  This will allow us to remove the very unsafe propane tank that runs the current stove and install a safer and more energy-efficient electric stove..  This change should save us $2000 in lower energy costs over the next decade.  We're creating a “Wish List” for BAJC and this is our first wish — a new energy-efficient safer electric stove!

BAJC members and friends could buy a “share” in the stove by donating to the stove purchase and installation.  You could pay for all or part of the costs:
- $795 for a new induction stove
- $200 for installation of the stove
- $20 for delivery

Any gift will help!  Please send checks made out to BAJC with”stove" in the memo line. Your support now will help us make this change before winter sets in. Thanks for your help.

Life-Saving Training

Michael Knapp, Susan Auslander, Cara Benedetto and Stephan Brandstatter (security committee) have been working with the Brattleboro Fire Dept. on our Emergency Preparedness Protocol project. A couple of things they identified are:
Familiarity and ability to use the defibrillator
Members trained in performing CPR.

Captain Keir will schedule a training session at the Brattleboro Fire Station on Elliot Street, for the Board, the Security committee, others who are frequently in the synagogue, and any BAJC members who wish to acquire CPR skills at no cost.

Space is limited to the first 20 people. We have five signed up already.

The training lasts 2-3 hours. Evenings are recommended.
We will set a time for the training at the fire station that will be convenient for most, or all, interested members. Please reply with preferred weekday and time.
