The 30th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is fast approaching.
Henrietta H. Fore, UNICEF’s Executive Director sent an open letter to the world’s children that started with the following words: “So, as we look back on 30 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, we should also look ahead, to the next 30 years. We must listen to you – today’s children and young people – about the issues of greatest concern to you now and begin working with you on twenty-first century solutions to twenty-first century problems." And what are the children of the world doing?
On September 23rd, sixteen child petitioners, aged between 8 to 17, from 12 countries, including Greta Thunberg from Sweden and Alexandria Villaseñor from New York, presented the landmark official complaint to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child to protest lack of the government action on the climate crisis. Greta Thunberg pleaded: “Change needs to happen now if we are to avoid the worst consequences. The climate crisis is not just the weather. It means also, lack of food and lack of water, places that are unlivable and refugees because of it. It is scary.”
