Five Faves

  1. Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino and her insights on capitalism’s way of turning free time into productivity (especially the chapter on athleisure, i.e. modern-day corseting). Mind. Blown.
  2. New Mexico: Acoma Pueblo, White Sands National Monument, the Lightning Field. These east coast eyes aren’t used to all that sky.
  3. Ramen/Pho/Kimchi Jigae/Hot Pot season.
  4. My living room at 5 o’clock in October (before daylight savings).
  5. Repair as a radical act and Patagonia’s Worn Wear Wagon where they will repair any brand of clothing for free!

100 Words

The Lightning Field by Walter De Maria

The Lightning Field isn’t about lightning at all. It’s about being human in a landscape so vast you feel at once diminutive and expansive. The poles measure all that distance and when the stars shine, outer space feels utterly palpable. Beyond scrub and sky, the poles point to purple mountains, tracing their tops and piercing the blue above. At 4:35, their tips catch the sun and glow like flames. At 6:15, they look like fluorescent bulbs standing on end, flattening to a steely blue up close. The resplendence fills me with emotion, bringing to mind everything leading here.
