PRAYER FOCUS

We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense.
We pray when there's nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.
Oswald Chambers
Remember NOONTIDE PRAYER every day.

Prayer Points -  (compiled by Joy Butler)

1          Pray for the devastating fire situation in Australia.  Pray for Gods mercy to be poured onto the land and the people.  Pray that people will turn to God at this time, and not to alcohol.

2          Pray for the Australia WCTU committee as they deliberate and discuss the role and administrative details of WCTU in this great south land.  Pray for wisdom and clarity of purpose.

3          Pray for Mr Elwyn Scale, the director of Dalhuntie Park Youth Care Incorporated who will be the speaker at Newcastle Circle Union in December.  He has been a man of great courage and ability who has blessed many young people over the last almost 50 years.  He has been unwell and needs our support.

4          Pray for our older members of WCTU who have faithfully served the organisation for most of their lives but now live in care homes or with family and are no longer so active as they were.

5          Pray for the children and young people we know in our communities that they will resist the formidable temptations they face all the time with the SAD (smoking, alcohol, drugs) poisons.

6          Pray that the literature, the social media posts, the speaking, the exhibitions, from WCTU will spread far beyond our expectations and influence young people for good.

HISTORY
WCTU in New Zealand
Arriving in 1885, a prominent American missionary, Mary Leavitt,   traveled to Auckland  to spread the message of the WCTU. For the next eight years, Leavitt traveled around New Zealand establishing WCTU branches and advocating for women to, "protect their homes and families from liquor, by claiming their rightful voice" and work to end the over-consumption of alcohol through gaining the vote. Working alongside Leavitt was Ann Ward, a New Zealand social worker and temperance activist, who served as the first national president of the WCTU in New Zealand.
Māori women were also active members of the WCTU, as many Māori women signed WCTU-initiated  petitions. The 1892 WCTU petition was signed by Louisa Matahau and Herewaka Poata. The 1893 petition was also signed by Matilda Ngapua and four other Māori women using European names.
The WCTU played a significant role in New Zealand, because it was the only public organisation in the country that could provide women political and leadership experience and training, and as a result, well over half of suffragists at the time were members of the organisation. One of the most notable New Zealand suffragists was Kate Sheppard, who was the leader of the WCTU's franchise department, and advised women in the WCTU to work closely with members of Parliament in order to get their ideas in political discourse. This eventually led to women winning the right to vote in 1893. Some prominent New Zealand suffragists and WCTU members include Kate Sheppard, Learmonth Dalrymple, Meri Te Tai Mangakahia, Elizabeth Caradus, Kate Milligan Edger, Christina Henderson, Annie Schnackenberg, Ann Ward and Lily Atkinson.
