Wayfarers is pleased announce our exchange exhibition with Art Lab Tokyo and Art Lab Akiba in Tokyo, Japan.
The concept of “wilderness,” untamed land lacking conspicuous traces of human activity, has existed as an essential fantasy in the American psyche. True wilderness may be physically disappearing every day but that does not stop us from recrafting wilderness from scratch so that we may explore and escape.
As part of an artist exchange, five American artists from the Wayfarers collective in Brooklyn, New York create an exhibition of new works at Art Lab Tokyo. These new works, developed in the US, and curated by the artists, explores wilderness graphically and metaphorically.
For the artists wilderness is often experienced on a journey undertaken in cars or on foot, with provisions, with maps and with guides pointing to the unknown. Expectations of grandeur and of a primal privacy are triggered. The government may have preserved these wild areas in advance for us. New encounters with plants and animals are anticipated. These are experienced with loved ones and become new memories and future secrets.
When we think we have finally arrived in wilderness we often trip over the leavings of another explorer. A shock (or disappointment) that we are not alone and are perhaps being watched. Or did the previous explorer perish? Unexpectedly, someone else’s garbage can comfort, a handhold against an abyss as we peer over the cliffs, trudge in the woods, or listen to the stars.

⾃自然界に存在する厳密な意味での荒野は⽇日々失われつつあるかもしれ ないが、我々が⼀一から造り上げる荒野を探検し、逃避する事は⽌止めら れない。

Wayfarers Collective（ウェイフェアラーズ・コレクティブ）
が、アーティスト交流プログラムの⼀一環として、この度アートラボ・トーキョーにて新作の展示会を開く。
アメリカで制作され、アーティストらによって監修された今回の新作 は物理理的そして精神的に荒野を紐解く。
⼀一般的に荒野は、地図を持ちガイドを雇い、未知の⽅方⻆角を⽬目指して⾞車車 や徒歩で旅する事が多い。
荘厳な景⾊色への期待と原始的なプライバシーが発⽣生する。
政府が先⽴立って⾃自然を保護してくれているかもしれない。
⾒見見たことのない植物や動物との遭遇もあるであろう。
これらはやがて家族や恋⼈人との新しい思い出や秘密になってゆく。
やっと荒野に到着したと思う時、我々は先に到着した探検家の跡形に 遭遇する。
⾃自分が第⼀一発⾒見見者でない、誰かに⾒見見られていたという驚きや失望。
先⼈人の身に⼀一体何が起こったのか。
我々は他⼈人が残したゴミを発⾒見見して安堵したり、おそるおそる⾕谷を覗 き込むときに握った⼿手のぬくもりや、森の散策、星の⾳音にささえられ たりするものだ。

The Wayfarers Exchange Program: With a goal of expanding our community to artists outside of Brooklyn and the US, the members of Wayfarers have initiated partnerships with other artist-run spaces and collectives. These collaborations involve Wayfarers offering its gallery to the partner organization and vice versa. Exchanges typically develop over a period of at least a year in advance of the exhibition. During that time, the participating Wayfarers members meet regularly to co-produce the event, which often involves developing new work in response to the exchange space, exchange country and collaborating artists. The pop-ups are planned as bottom-up, artist-run and artist-curated events.
Wayfarers交換プログラム：
コミュニティの拡大を目的に、Wayfarersは国内外のアートスペースや芸術家グループとパートナーシップを結んでいる。
コラボレーションの一環としてWayfarers Galleryのスペース提供を行っている。
アーティストらの交流は展示会までの１年程度続けられ、期間中メンバー達は定期的に打ち合わせを行い展示会を共同プロデュースする。
ロケーションやコラボレーションするアーティストを交換することから新しい作品が生まれることも多い。
ポップアップはアーティストらによって監修、運営される一般参加型のイベントである。
