PEOPLE HIGHLIGHTS
BIG Drop In Unemployment!
One of the focus areas of the Choice Neighborhood Initiative is to support positive outcomes for Westlawn families who have been directly impacted by the redevelopment of the neighborhood. HACM has six case managers working one-on-one with the relocated families to support them in achieving their own self-sufficiency plans.

Over the past 3 years, unemployment among the over 350 households receiving case management has dropped from 55% to 24%! This is an incredible achievement due to the hard work of our Westlawn families with the support of the CNI case management team!  Congratulations!

Best Babies Zone Engages Residents
The Best Babies Zone (BBZ) Westlawn team has been busy engaging residents in the community to help every baby survive and thrive. The team hosted a successful StorySlam with Ex Fabula in September where residents shared powerful stories on the topic of "birth". A great audience of residents, health providers and other stakeholders attended to hear the stories of our courageous tellers.

The BBZ team also organized an On The Table discussion on October 10th. Participants shared a meal together and discussed their experiences within the healthcare system.

As the new year approaches, BBZ Westlawn is looking forward to growing its team of Health and Wellness Ambassadors and catalyzing the success of 2019.

Many thanks to United HealthCare, Greater Milwaukee Foundation and its Ideas To Action fund, and March of Dimes for supporting BBZ Westlawn activities!

Residents Select Trees for Neighborhood
Thank you to everyone who attended the tree decision-making workshops on Oct. 5th and 10th. The workshops were part of a project to plant 300 trees in the area next year through a partnership with Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Choice Neighborhood, Havenwoods Economic Development Corp., the City of Milwaukee Forestry Department, U.S. Department of Forestry, Great Lakes Restoration and others. We appreciated the opportunity to engage participants about the types of trees they want to see in the neighborhood. Upon ranking their favorite trees, participants selected the Emerald City Tulip Tree, Princeton Elm, Autumn Blaze and Swamp White Oak as their top choices.

Also, the project will offer homeowners the opportunity to receive a free rain barrel and free tree for their yards.

More information will be shared in early spring, but feel free to send questions to Jessica Noth at jnoth@havenwoods.org
See Something? Say Something!
Working together, we can ensure the Choice Neighborhood is a safe place for all.  How can you help? If you see a crime in progress or something suspicious, it's important to call the police so they can respond and so there's documentation of neighborhood issues.

Call 911 for emergencies and (414) 933-4444 (then, press 9) for non-emergencies. Your call can remain anonymous if you choose.

You are also invited to the monthly 4th District Crime & Safety meeting, which is held every last Tuesday of the month at 6 pm at the Safety Academy, 6680 N. Teutonia Avenue.  The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 26th.  (Please note there will be no meetings in December and January).
Over 500 Attend The End of Summer Community Jam
Thanks to everyone who participated in the End of Summer Community Jam and the Walk with Mayor Barrett and Alderman Johnson.  The event helped connect over 500 people through great food, music, resources, and a shared sense of community! This year's neighborhood walk traveled to each of the CNI schools to celebrate the importance of our neighborhood schools. Special thanks to the coordinating committee, made up of the Westlawn Resident Council, Safe & Sound, Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, HACM, CNI and the schools! More photos available on our Facebook page.
