A&E Students Tour Portland Community College

By: Amber Moorhead
Students in the Assessment & Evaluation Program at the Donald E. Long School toured the Portland Community College Rock Creek campus, Oct. 23. Students explored the various trade school opportunities available. They were especially excited by the auto collision repair, diesel mechanic, vet tech, and building and construction programs. This opportunity gave them all a chance to see that education comes in various forms, and that there are numerous opportunities available for anyone willing to set goals.

Students learned in the auto collision repair program that they could earn a credential in one year that would provide them a high paying job in a career field that is in high demand. "An experienced technician may earn up to $73,000 annually," says the Portland Community College's Auto Collision Repair Technology webpage

Students also learned that employers come to the school to recruit graduates. This provides more accessibility to the job market after graduation, which eases the transition from education to the workforce.

The building and construction program interested many of the students because the classroom was a job site with multiple homes being built, each by students in teams of five.

The vet tech program was exciting; farm animals roamed abundantly, not too far from a classroom designed to conduct onsite surgeries.

Students became curious about the variety of educational opportunities available in their community and were excited to learn about the Oregon Promise Grant, a scholarship that provides “tuition costs at any Oregon community college for recent high school graduates and GED test graduates,” according to the Oregon Promise webpage at oregonstudentaid.gov/oregon-promise.aspx.
