In case you missed it, ESIP welcomed Samantha Sands as Meetings Director two weeks ago. With her background is in environmental geoscience and museum & field studies, including her most recent role as Earth and Space Science Program Specialist at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Erin Robinson noted in an announcement to the community that, "Samantha is an ideal addition to our team."

We would also like to give a warm welcome to ESIP's SEVEN new partner organizations:

  • Anaconda, Inc.
  • CyVerse
  • Geoscience Australia
  • Goucher College Center for Data, Mathematical, and Computational Sciences
  • Jetstream
  • San Diego Supercomputer Center
  • Zeus Volkov Systems LLC

Looking for some great reads this week? Check out the Information Quality Cluster's recently published white paper led by David Moroni entitled, Understanding the Various Perspectives of Earth Science Observational Data Uncertainty, and Meet the Maintainers, a new blog post by Mark Parsons. You can also peruse ESIP in the Media, including recent press releases on Operational Readiness Levels for better disaster response and management and Geoweaver, an ESIP Lab-funded Project that helps scientists use machine learning to study the planet.

Have a great week,
Megan

ESIP 2020 Winter Meeting News

2020 ESIP Winter Meeting: Registration OPEN!
Registration is now open for the 2020 ESIP Winter Meeting. Register now through December 6th to take advantage of early-bird registration rates!

ESIP Winter Meeting Side Event: ESIP and OGC Coverage Processing and Analysis Sprint
ESIP and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) are convening an agile development sprint to advance APIs for analytics on coverages, arrays, and gridded data beginning the day before the ESIP Winter Meeting (1/6) and continuing on 1/7. This will be a key event in the development of OGC APIs for geospatial resources and building blocks for community APIs. A previous OGC API Hackathon in June 2019 advanced common elements across OGC APIs for Features, Coverages, Map Tiles, Processing and Catalogs. The next sprints are advancing specific elements of the individual APIs. You may opt to register for this event using the same registration form as is used for the ESIP Winter Meeting linked here. A limited amount of travel support is available. Please complete this form if you would like to be considered for this support.

More ESIP News

Information Quality Cluster: Understanding the Various Perspectives of Earth Science Observational Data Uncertainty
The ESIP Information Quality Cluster (IQC) recently published a white paper in the ESIP Figshare Repository. The paper, led by David Moroni (JPL PO.DAAC), originated as a result of invited plenary presentations and discussions during the ESIP Summer Meeting in 2017 and represents the culmination of much hard work on the part of David and the impressive number of 18 co-authors. The IQC Cluster leads are thankful to all the authors for valuable and thoughtful inputs, and for their persistence through a highly iterative process to bring this paper together. If you'd like to catch up with the IQC Cluster, check out (in-person or remotely) the breakout session “Bringing Science Data Uncertainty Down to Earth - Sub-orbital, In Situ, and Beyond” to be held at the ESIP Winter Meeting on 1/7.

Data Help Desk at AGU 2019
The Data FAIR at the 2019 AGU Fall Meeting is a program, hosted by ESIP, EarthCube, and AGU, along with their partners, that provides researchers with opportunities to engage with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain and learn skills and techniques that will help further their research and make their data and software open and FAIR. The Data FAIR will include Town Halls, Workshops, and the Data Help Desk staffed with experts from the Earth and space science informatics community and demos at Exhibit Hall Booth #1329. Thanks to those of you who have volunteered to help out. If you'll be at AGU, come see us at the Data Help Desk and join us for the Town Halls! You can also help us tell others about the event using the text found here.

Fall 2019 ESIP Lab Request for Proposals Released
The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Lab is happy to announce the release of its Fall 2019 Request for Proposals. The ESIP Lab will provide up to $10K of seed funding for incubator-style projects that run 6-8 months and lie in the realm of good ideas ready to be tried out.

Project proposals that address these areas will be given priority:

  • Modernization of Earth science workflows using community-recommended best practices — use of open source software and cloud computing are encouraged.
  • Cloud computing use cases for Earth science — creation of well-documented notebooks showing how to collect, distribute, or analyze Earth science data in the cloud.
  • Extension of open source software critical to collecting, distributing, or analyzing Earth science data.

For more information, check out the full RFP and apply by 1/10/20 at: https://www.esipfed.org/rfp.
